Hopkins was totally hopeless after round 4 and in no way won that fight imo, if you like compubox and i know it doesnt tell the whole story but calzaghe was miles ahead on punch stats plus to top it off hopkins resorting to faking low blows was just embarrassing, it was a close fight at times but a clear win for calzaghe i think
This shot pretty much summarizes the fight had scored as Hopkins winning by 2 points. In between Calzaghe's ineffective girly slaps, Hopkins would release and land many of these short, accurate shots. Look at the ref run to save the Welsh faker. This content is protected
apart from belt joe on his snotter and almost knock him out. but sorry, it was a "FLASH KO", which apparently take no skill and total fluke. there's no denying Calzaghe slapped the **** out of him in the latter half of the fight. Hopkins didn't 'boss it' at all, Calzaghe did. Hopkins thought he had it won and got complacent, so Hopkins can't complaint he points went the other way. Calzaghe was pressuring and landing far more than him.
I know. yet no-one revisits the Cotto-Mosley decision, which was a much closer title fight from that period. Mosley lost a very close fight, didn't ***** or whine, never heard another word about it.
I had it for Calzaghe by 5 points. If you're looking for a fight where Calzaghe lost, look at his fight with Robin Reid. I had Reid up by 2 points at the end of that one.
awful fight but calzaghe won it by sheer volume of slaps not much effective punching from that side of this bout
I'm not saying that slaps don't hurt. Otherwise Calzaghe wouldn't throw them. But they are illegal and definitely not scoring shots. Headbutts hurt. Are we going to score those?
I'm not talking about weak punches. I'm talking about shots that land with the inside of the glove. Watch the video clip someone posted above and although Calzaghe missed everything you'll get an idea of how the shots would have landed if Hopkins hadn't moved out of the way.
I'm really tired of hearing about how Calzaghe's slaps are illegal. Should Celestino Caballero be disqualified as well? Look, show me a gif where Calzaghe LANDS with the inside of his glove. There might be times where it happens, but all fighters do that sometimes. Calzaghe's punch MOTION is a slap, but the punch itself lands on the knuckles. It's ugly, but it's not an actual slap. It's a punch thrown with a noodle-limp arm that snaps over at the end. I've sparred a guy who throws like that (very similar to Caballero in a lot of ways) and those ****ers HURT. It's like a whip with a rock at the end of it. And that gif is way overused. It's like 5 seconds of the fight. You can tell Calzaghe isn't punching, he's windmilling his arms around to make Hopkins back up. When Hopkins gets to the ropes, Calzaghe throws a left which lands on Hopkins' shoulder, and Hopkins counters with a right han and a headbutt.
