What about jake lamotta? ive never seen him fight but I know he liked to swarm and get close... normally those kinds of fighters forget about the jab
Apparently according to some of the old writing Lamotta's jab was the key to success he had against Robinson so i think we can cross him off the list.
Ricky Hatton...not great, but pretty darned good. Joe Frazier's jab was actually really good when he used it but he never did so, he qualifies... Young George
I think even Young George had a pretty good jab. Frazier might be a good call ... although i haven't seen enough of him. Hatton seemed to be flakey with the jab.... but also more succesful when he did choose to use it (ie vs Malignaggi)
I think there are all pretty good fighters but do they qualify as "great"? I can name dozens of so-so contenders who never used a jab but it's rare to have truly great fighters who never utilize one.
i dont think mike tyson threw that many jabs, but the again he didnt realy have to cause his rushdown was so fast. He got in all the time without even using the jab
If you watch the st valentines day massacre, he consistently finds and disrupts robinson with his jab.
I think prime Tyson actually had a pretty underrated jab ... for someone with such a height and reach disadvantage he seemed to use it pretty well. And thank you KillSomething about pointing out the Robinson fight, i think Lamotta actually had quite the jab. Son of Gaul brought up Gene Fullmer ... i really do not know anything about him... does anyone know if he used the jab?
He had a pretty nice double jab from what I've seen of him. He was landing that double jab nicely on Robinson in their 6th fight before he got tired (and broken down from subtle body work) and then turned into a human pinata in the final 3 rounds. No way, Hagler had one of the best southpaw jabs ever. Very heavy and one of Hagler's best weapons. Tyson had a nice heavy jab that he used to set up shots. Obviously he wasn't going to use it the way a DLH/Hagler/Lewis would due to his short reach, but it was a pretty good jab. I really liked the way he used it against Tucker when he wasn't doing too well with the rest of his arsenal.
