He has a kickboxing background, not MMA. Not full on Muay Thai kickboxing either, full-contact (misleading name, shiny pants) which only allows kicks above the waist, no elbows, and no clinching.

No disrespect to full contact kickboxers, but a K1 or Thai style HW would have brutalized him in his kickboxing days.

Because tonight wasn't a wrestling match, or even a submission grappling match.

Toney was allowed to punch, he just wasn't good enough, it was a matter of skill, not rules, that stopped him.

In boxing it would be a matter of rules, not skills stopping Couture.

Looks like they are making out in your av. I don't know what Toney was thinkin' getting his ass into MMA knowing that he'd have enough trouble getting up on his own, because of all that fat, even without someone trying to keep him down. RC dove straight for JT's nuts and that was the "fight" right there. All in all, an embarrassing night for JT.

Why? Did Toney challenge Randy to a wrestling match that I didn't know about?

They fought in MMA. Toney can box, Randy can wrestle... the better man/style wins. Randy won.

I do give credit to Mercer, but let me give you the background on that fight.

It was originally signed as a boxing match, but couldn't get sanctioned. It was then moved to an MMA match, but the two agreed before hand to stand, essentially a kickboxing match with MMA gloves.

So you have Sylvia who hadn't been training anything other than boxing (or much of anything at all from the weigh he put on 50-60 lbs of fat since his last fight) went out there, threw a leg kick, got countered with a beauty of a right, lights the **** out.

Great job Mercer, really, that took balls period.

    There were extenuating circumstances though.

    No why should I?

I guess im going to have to say this one more time.

Tim Silva is/was/has always been a STRIKER. meaning that he stands up and punches.

He sprawled to avoid take downs, and he fought standing up.

And at the time Mercer got him, he was shot. Now i know that Mercer isnt exactly in his prime either, but seriously. . . nobody can be impressed with ANYONE other then maybe Pee Wee Herman for beating that version of Tim Silva.

Muhammad Ali could beat Tim Silva's ass. Ali's daughter could beat Silva's ass.

No, I think Kickboxers who train to not use leg kicks, knees, elbows, or the clinch are going to usually lose to kickboxers that do.

A long line of fights between the two types of fighters agree with me.

You get the odd fighter like Benny Urquidez who was able to change over succesfully, but he is the exception.

There was high level HW Dutch style kickboxing going on, which is much closer to Muay Thai, still no elbows, less clinching, but with leg kicks, and knees, and under those more permissive and common rules, Vitali would have been seriously in trouble.

That is not what I said at all.

I said Toney didn't have the skill to use his boxing, skills like not being taken down, skills like having a clue what to do on the ground. I didn't say his boxing was unskilled, I said he didn't have the skills to use his boxing.

The problem wasn't that he wasn't allowed to punch because of rules, the problem was he wasn't allowed to punch because of a lack of other skills.

With Randy in boxing, the problem would be he wouldn't be able to use his primary skills because the rules don't allow it.
