Did it make sense to pit Toney vs Couture in his first MMA match?

I don't get MMA... Take James Toney. He never fought an MMA fight. I was watching yesterday MMA something TV show where they were trying to hype the fight, and they were talking about Couture who's one of the greatest MMA fighter around, most decorated, most skilled, etc...

Then, you have James Toney. Fat... Old... Who's never fought in an MMA fight... But he wants to start doing MMA, at 42 I think he is... So who do they put him against? Against another boxer starting in MMA? An MMA fighter with just a couple fights on his resume? Noooo... Against one of the greatest MMA fighter around, most decorated, most skilled, etc.

WTF! It's a setup for the boxer to lose... Let's take that wrestler guy who's now HW MMA champ... What's his name... With the bad ugly dagger tattoo on his chest... Well, whoever that guy is, wants to start a boxing career. Well, who would you put him against? Klithskos? Haye? Adamek? Valuev?

No... At least, you do like the big names in boxing who took a couple years of, and you take a warm up fight... You don't get in the right right away against a top tier fighter... Anyhow, this was obviously a move to discredit boxing, and reading some articles about the fight claiming things like "boxing not being a real fight" because Toney lost just proves the point.

Put Couture in a boxing ring vs Toney, and let's see if Boxing is a real fight or not... When Couture is KO'd, then MMA is not a real fight?

Ok well watching the interview where Dana said it was Toney who chased him around and wanted the Couture fight... Did he really challenge Couture or did he just wanted to do an MMA fight? If so, then I guess it was Toney who was simply going for a quick, easy cash grab and just wasn't interested in doing 2-3 fights and really getting into MMA... He's 42 anyhow, not like he could have had a long and glorious MMA career...

toney got excatly what he asked for. boxers just don't get the fact that punching power does you no good when you're flat on your back geeting chocked out.

Of course, and boxing 'grappling' has nothing to do with resisting take downs or any of the such...

But is that really what Toney asked for?

Ok... Yep, he somewhat did during his ramblings...

:patsch Well.. He made some $$$, which I'm pretty damn sure it's what he wanted.

Also Toney called out the wrong guy... If called out some guy like Tank Abbott, or Kimbo Slice, mostly strikers, then he would have a better chance... And even then, Mercer fought Kimbo and lost by a choke... To Kimbo... The streetfighter who brawled on the streets using only punches... So even then, since you're playing by MMA rules, you can't rule out take downs, ground game, submissions, etc...

Basically, if you go into MMA, better have your whole game rounded up: Being adequate in MMA; being able to avoid takedowns, submissions, etc... Pretty much like Brock Lesnar, he was a wrestler, isn't master in all aspects of MMA but so far seems to know enough how to defend against most things... Most of the time... That's how a boxer should be if he wants to fare ok in MMA... So far, we haven't seen a boxer like that, Toney, Mercer, all inadequate for MMA...

White was only ever going to keep him for one fight.

He knew Toney was going to get his ass handed to him. Basically this fight was to give boxing a kick in the teeth, and promote MMA over it.

White paid him 700k-1M I heard, which is probably up there with the highest in UFC history. Seems absurd he would pay someone with no MMA experience that much, especially after all the crap he gave Strikeforce for siging Herchel Walker.

Now with a global audience having seen one of boxing's most decorated fighters get embarrassed by a UFC fighter in a minute and a half it paid off and it's certainly worth more than the money he paid Toney.

Even if that fat tub of lard has been far removed from an elite boxer for quite some time now, the UFC promoted this as one of boxing's best vs one of the UFCs best and as far as casual fans go that's what they saw.

I think Dana had more to do with the choice of opponent, than Toney calling them out. White could have put Toney in their with a Rampage or Chuck Liddell which no doubt would have been better fights. But he wanted someone to make a statement and to give Toney as little a hope as possible. I believe Dana called Couture, not the other way round which Couture and White have gone out of their way to point out was the case in the lead up.

why match toney with a mma fighter with only a few fights when toney is a 11 time world boxing champion. They both had there strengths, toneys strength was his stand up and coutures is his wrestling. That is a even match up to me. If you think he should be matched up against another boxer in a mma fight, then he should just stick to boxing.
It just proved mma is the superior sport, if they cant out strike you , they can take you down and choke you out.

Dana should have put Toney in with Spider Silva , as it would have been a good fight. Silva wanted to fight Jones , and he would have stood with Toney . Would have been much better.
The Chicken **** Couture knowing all well his wrestling skills thats what he could do , and did not even make the fight interesting.

That fight pissed me off so much. Not sure if its Toney Coulture or Dana that I feel is the **** head. The fight just sucked.

So you think Randy should have went easy on James and be incredibly stupid by engaging a pro-boxer in a stand-up match? It doesn't make sense to me.

What would have been awesome, if he let Toney up midway in the fight, after a minute or so of groundwork, to then take him down and second time and finishing him with a submission... Maybe even let him up a 2nd time... Not to hurt Toney, just to show that he's so confident that he doesn't fear Toney. And instead of pounding him, he just should have gone for a submission... But actually, I think Couture, maybe wisely, still feared Toney...

Toney didn't belong in that ring. Really, besides punching standing up, what's Toney going to do? And again... Even standing up, with the type of takedown Couture used, no way Toney will be able to get him with a punch... He could have put his foot on top of Couture's head, but that's about it...

Toney was offered Kimbo Slice but declined he wanted Brock Lesnar but Dana declined and they settled for Couture. I'm sure you guys know James and he wants the best...heheh and now he'll go back to boxing and call out the Klitschko's.

If by "fear" (regarding his stand-up), you mean cautious, then yes.

IMHO, Randy did the right thing. Once the match starts, be professional and do what you're to do. There's no point in senseless showboating by fighting a pro boxer in a stand-up match. He will look ridicoloulsly stupid if he did that and end up getting KTFO'd.

You also have to consider/respect his corner's feelings. What do you think they would feel if after months of training on the execution of a takedown, he just decided to abandon game plan and just do what he wants.

This fight was bs. I was saying the same thing. Why would you fight against one of the best wrestlers ever in UFC for your first fight. There was no way to win, if you want to try MMA and have a chance at least fight someone whos gonna stand up with you.

Whole thing was a joke and everyone was right, dont fight the guy in his game and expect to win... it would have been the same joke as if Randy tried fight in a boxing match with Toney.

kimbo slice is a bum, couture was proving a point by showing how quickly he could put away a boxer.
