a completley different sport than boxing!! Why can't people see this? This does not prove what is better, it proved that the two sports are to be respected in thier arena. I gave Toney a better shot than I should have. I was certain there would be at least a short exchange in punches before Randy took him down.

My first love was boxing, then around 1993 I became a fan of cage fighting (those days it was hard to call it MMA) , but I never stopped loving boxing. People can like football and basketball, why then do we have to be polorized by boxing or MMA? The whole arguement is ridiculas.

Check the douche whose thread is about Couture fighting Toney in a boxing match. He himself is an MMA fan who doesn't understand that MMA is a separate and individual sport, so it's not only boxing fans who don't grasp the issue you are talking about.

thread starter hit the nail on the head

the so called die hard boxing fans have problems with people who are fans of both sports, its bull**** as the majority of them have second and third favourite sports however they dislike mma and you cannot be a fan of both

i have been a huge boxing fan since i was 8 and it still is my fav sport always will be, mma is second on the list and its ****ing great too

I don't get it myself i love watching both boxing and MMA, it isn't rocket science an MMA fighter in a ring with just pure boxing rules wil get owned my just about any top 50 ranked boxer, same as a boxer in a cage will get owned by just about any average MMA fighter, i don't get the whole boxing v mma **** i will always continue to watch them both they are 2 different sports.

How come there is never any hate towards KICKBOXING??

I think all the hate shown towards MMA is certain boxing fans who are somewhat THREATENED with the continuel growth of the sport.

Man its so lame..I love all fighting..Nothing beats watching Two people tests themselves against another in the squared cirle/cage..

    This^:good

I'm a HUGE Fedor fan but if he was to step into a ring with Wladimir Klitschko for a boxing match it would be curtains for him. Put that same match in a cage with MMA rules, Wlad would be eating his meals through a straw.

I wonder if the same stupid **** happens on squash or tennis forums each proclaiming one is a better than the other just cause they hold a ****ing racquet but are held in a complete diffrent environment like MMA and boxing.

It is not a different sport. Boxing is a major component of MMA. Mercer showed what boxing can do. Toney was just an old, shot, fat fighter.

Why are you coming out with all this **** now ?

Of course they are different sports.

It dosnet mean James Toney could not have won.

    Boxers can win in MMA.

But for a complete novice MMA fighter with no fights to go straight in with the Former UFC World Heavyweight Champ - it was obvious the likely outcome was he would lose quickly.

Interesting as it was, all this fight did was cheapen the UFC brand.

If Toney had said that he was going to go back, work on his ground game and try again, then maybe this would have been more than a novelty circus show. Tha fact that he's already quit MMA without even throwing a punch proves what a joke his venture into MMA really was.
