Just one of the most brutal ko's Ive ever seen...Foster just didnt beat guys, he flat out ruined them.

That jab had some serious pop in it.

What an awesome fighter. If there's one thing we can be sure of, it's that he'd have brutally KO'd Andre Ward.

 

I wince every time i see this, not because of the KO which as awesome as it was was not entirely unpredicted, but because this must be the worst bit of cornerwork i have ever seen, Poor Mike was out before he hit the deck, people didnt know if he was even alive ! Mike head no doubt suffered secondary Trauma in hitting the canvas, and as if this wasnt enough.....Mike's Cornerman is quickly in the ring to render assistance, this assistence takes the form of lifting Mike unconscious unresisting head up and dowm half a dozen times then placing it gently on the canvas...then, for some strange reason, lifting Mikes head up off the canvas again then simply "letting it go" to smack back on the canvas ! it makes Sickening viewing, and i would of loved to hear the cornermans take on what medical research deemed a third Head Trauma to be beneficial to a person who has already been striken by two !

I remember at the time that there was some misgivings about letting Mike at only 22 years old into the same ring with all time great Foster, a big dose of Green cured that, Maybe they should have looked at who was working the corner too. it still makes nasty viewing.

I remember reading Foster thought he had killed Quarry.

I totally disagree with this statement. Quarry was doing relatively well the preceding rounds. The problem is facing an assassin like Foster who had 1 punch power in both hands. It's a tightrope act of the largest magnitude to walk.


I don't know if you watched the sport at the time or not, but Foster was on the other side of the ladder by that time. And you had damage from that brutal Frazier fight. And that long sustained beating from Ali & that was a different Foster. But Foster continued to defend the lh title regardless.

At any rate, whenever there is an old champion there is 1 style they never ever like matching up with--those slicksters. Foster did. The 35-0 w/ 5 ko guy. An old fighters worst nightmare because they do not provide openings to exploit. Because they have a terrific defense/fight smart/top notch reflexes/boxing brains. That's how they win. They accomplish everything without the benefit of punching power. Go subtract punching power from other fighters and see how long they remain undefeated.

But Foster fought anyone anytime and anywhere. Other champs just don't sign the contract for the fight. And then, how often do you actually see those Pernell Whitaker/Sven Ottke types brutally ko'd anyway?

So actually what you had is a match of the rarest variety. And a result of the rarest variety.

 

Foster actually fought a pretty solid variety of fighters during his title reign now that I look over his record.
