If Joe Louis was such a fool

On the subject of being fed lines, I believe many of ALi's poems were actually wrote for him, correct me if I'm misinformed

1 of my favourite Louis lines was when Conn said 'You could have at least let me borrow the title for a few months Joe' who', replied 'I lent you the title for 13rounds and see how you looked after it' - (words to that effect)

 

Well, I would not own up to writing most of them, would you?

Yes, Louis was a smart man, and like Ali, I don't mean book smarts. You can see it through his actions.


I personally love how right after knocking Braddock out, he walks over to the referee, and starts to put his own hand up. As he raises his hand, he also moves it towards the ref, until the referee grabs his hand and raises it for him.

lol...he knew he was not supposed to raise his hands after knocking someone out, but he had found a way around it when he wanted/needed to do it most!

 

True genius in action

 

I still cant believe how smart Jack Johnson was. He stands out to me the most, because he lived in a time period where he would be the least likely to be intelligent.

This is the fourth paragraph of his autobiography:

"You white men are mighty proud when you can trace your lineage back to the Crusades, something like ten centuries ago. But can you tell me who built those edifices your ancestors found is Palestine at the time of the Crusades, already 20 centuries old at the time? To what country did Soloman go, seeking the gold to cover the roof of his temple? Who built the pyramids forty centuries ago? Which race erected the monuments of Egypt, before anyone knew Europe even existed-when the inhabitants of Europe, dressed in animal skins, were still scraping out a miserable existence in caves? Who? But what good does it do to ask such a question? I took up the pen to talk only of things of our own era."

Amazing. Doesn't this sound familiar? Not the exact quote, but the theme of it. Right or wrong, people to this day still talk about these things to instill racial pride, and he was doing it 100 years ago. He was probably one of the first to publicly speak of of these ideas in such a way.

I feel like when many people think of Johnson, his personality deters from the mood of oppression in his era. And I think that's what he always wanted. To be remembered as a free happy man, rather than an oppressed and abused one. How amazing....

 

And ill add one more:

Louis was backing Liston during the Ali-Liston bout. Louis had said that he believes Liston will be too much for Clay. He also called a big gambler in Vegas along with two other people at the weigh in after seeing Ali's antics, and told the gambler to bet on Liston. Everyone in that room though Ali went crazy.


Louis, as most of us know, was also a commentator of the fight. After the first round of the fight, Ali had shown his boxing superiority over Liston to the world. But people had no idea what they saw. Was something wrong with Liston? Was it a freak show round? Nobody had really fully grasped what had just happened, and then Joe Louis states: "I think we've just seen one of the greatest rounds from anybody in a long time."
It wasn't until round two when people were realizing the actions in the ring were vindicating Louis' praise.


I love it. Louis had so have been to biased towards believing and hoping Liston would win. But his honor towards boxing was even bigger, that he had to tell it like it is. And he was right! That is one of the most memorable rounds in the history of the sport

Joe Louis was a naturally smart man. Sugar RR talked about his womanizing and gambling habits but Joe was a ballsy guy outside the ring as well as in. His wisdom on some of his spontaneous quotes could only be attributed to him. Joe had a dry sense of humor and was very deep. He was not a talker by nature but his words were heavy. I remember Al Sylvani saying to Joe after a win"Joe I think you hit him with my Left" and Joe said "Al, I think I hit him with my right too"

 

Ali wrote all his poems.

Bundini Brown invented some of the catch phrases like someone stated, but when you heard a 10-16 line poem from Ali, its all him. He was the first rapper ever!

 

No,Joe had dark grey business suit on,with a white on white shirt,he forgot his tie .Marva was wearing a white silk velvet gown,with a train trimmed with ermine.
I had a grey chalk stripe suit, with a plain dark maroon tie ,in a windsor knot.
Black was the best man ,I forget what he wore.

lol Ali barely passed middle school. He was failing many of his classes. The principal then gathered a meeting with the teachers and told them that this kid will probably be more important that this entire school one day, and it would be stupid to fail him.

And yet he is one of the smartest people of the century pertaining to social issues

 

His son, and many others said that he was given the line "We will win, because God is on our side." However when he was up there he said "We will win because we are on God's side."

According to his son, Louis meant to change the line, and it wasn't by mistake. If you think about it, the way he said it was 10x better. They realized it right after he said it, and the quotes high popularity can be attributed, in part, to that change.
