"Gerry Cooney vs. Texas Cobb" circa--1982.. Who Wins?

I've been dinged for this, but I think Shavers' power is a bit overrated.... He never really parked any true "A" guys during his career..... His top-notchers were against "Ellis and Norton" who were known to have shaky chins anyway....

But, it's true. Once that level of competition went up, most of the ko's in Shavers bouts were by the opponents. But the guy was murder on a lot of those 3rd tier & occasional 2nd tier opponents.

 

Cooney wins easily against Cobb. If they don't stop it, Cooney wins by wide decision.

But in the fights that he lost against "A" level opposition, he never hit Quarry, dropped Lyle like a sack of potatoes with the bell saving Ron, rocked Ali several times, flattened Holmes and was only denied of a win by Larry's miraculous recovery. The latter three went onto call Shavers the hardest puncher they met.

 

he hurt them but did not finish them. It's finishing ability that counts anyway.

And what ultimately happened to Earnie when he was the guy hurt in those Quarry and Holmes bouts? What bag of tricks did he turn to to survive?

 

Raw power is what counts when it comes to raw power. Earnie surely wasn't the greatest puncher, but he may have hit the hardest. Doesn't matter if his finishing consisted of throwing wild right hand bombs over and over hoping atleast one of them landed flush.

I don't see why people discredit his power for reasons other than punching power... Had he knocked out Larry Holmes and Muhammad Ali, we would be talking about Shavers as one of the greatest fighters of all time, but he wasn't.

 

We would've also have said that Gerry Cooney was the greatest heavyweight since the invention of the wheel had Gerry clobbered and KO'd "Holmes, Spinks and Foreman."

Gerry, like Earnie Shavers, had wicked power, but both lacked skills to enforce them on quality opposition....

When both "Shavers and Snipes" decked Holmes in 1979 and 1981 both Earnie and Renaldo went right hand crazy and zinged / winged too many sloppy punches into the night-time air cuz neither knew how to put their punches together properly........

 

I have the fight and it was lose, but i thought norton did win it. and don't forget he lost to dokes on the samchez-castonon undercard.

 

Cooney .. Cobb lacked power, speed and stamina ...

I would pick Cooney by Decision as well, I don't think he could put Cobb away but I think he wins a close decision..

 

After seeing Cobb do well with Norton and TKO Shavers before getting schooled by Holmes in 1982, I gotta say that Tex Cobb was better than what most critics give him credit for........ Cobb also was tuff in there with Michael Dokes on two occasions...... Cobb was a bad-ass........ I'd have loved him to be in with my head security back in the late 80s........ Cobb does / did intimiadate a mother****er pretty good........

Dokes won a hardfought decision over Cobb in early '81, but could not hold Tex off of him.Cooney would not be able to stop Tex and would have to settle for an good competitive UD.Norton mentioned in his book that Tex had bet all his purse on him winning the fight, and when he didn't, came looking for Ken at the hotel, which prompted Ken to call the police.
