Was Vitali past his prime when he fought Lewis?

Did Vitali fight Lewis coming off horrific injuries in a plane crash?

Pep was never even supposed to walk again, let alone fight, let alone fight for the championship, let alone beat Sandy Saddler. Did Vitali ever beat Lewis?

You can cut this cake any way you like it. The fact is that Willie Pep lost to just one man between 1943 and 1951, fighting god knows how many contests, and that man was Sadddler. Saddler stopped him three times in this time. These wins are better than anything Pep has just because Pep is so great.

Pep was more dominant but doesn't have the series of wins over a great fighter like Saddler does. So it really comes down to how your ratings work.

I personally rank Pep above Saddler - but a class above? No. What the thread is about is the class gap being closed by power. So, a good fighter beating a great one and so on. There's no class gap here for me.

We are in agreement. I do rank Pep above Saddler, but not a class above. Saddler sits comfortably in my top 4 126lbers of all time.

Yeah, that's basically what I was seeing. I have them back to back personally, 1 and 2.

While I wouldn't say he had his number, Carmen Basilio was poison for Ray Robinson who was a much superior technician in my opinion

Mario Maldonado-Buster Drayton. The second decision Maldonado registered over Drayton was just after Buster ruined Clint Jackson's career on live national television. Maldonado had some other fine career wins, but he was not ever championship caliber material.

I am a great admirer of carmen Basilio...Tough, tough fighter...
But the Ray Robinson who fought Basilio in 1957 and 1958, was thirty six
and thirty seven years of age...Way past his PRIME...I saw Ray Robinson in his prime 10 years BEFORE, andthat Ray Robinson would have been way too much for tough Carmen...Today people forget this fact...

Tippy Larkin seemed to falter against most of the big punchers he faced, in particular Lew Jenkins and Al "Bummy" Davis in back to back bouts. Not quite what the thread was asking for, though, I guess. I thought him a superior fighter to both, just a shame about that chin.

    TOmmy Morrison vs George Foreman
Andy Price vs Pipino Cuevas,Carlos Palomino
    Bobo Olson vs Kid Gavilan
Paulie Ayala vs Johnny Tapia (although i thought Tapia was robbed the 2nd time)
    Greg Haugen vs Hector Camacho
    Vilomar Fernandez vs Alexis Arguello

I know some of these guys only fought once but thought id still drop those fights.

Ok sorry just read the thread title, outside of Morrison the winners here were more boxer types

How about Gaby Canizales vs Miguel Lora? Although both were on the downside at this time.
