Come on everyone lets be real - fair enough in giving due to Ellis - but come on Ez Charles was literally one of the best fighters ever pound for pound - ONE OF THE BEST EVER POUND FOR POUND PERIOD - Ellis wasn't even close to being that good - it amazes me how so many people get carried away with things like this -

legendary trainer Ray Arcel said of Charles : "The word 'great' is misused. Charles was naturally great. When Charles was a middleweight, I don't even know if even Ray Robinson could have beaten him."

Arcel would've scoffed at the idea of Ellis having any chance to beat Ezz.

Ray Arcel was partial to Charles because he trained Charles for his win over Joe Louis in '50..... Charles was Arcel's heavyweight champ......... Naturally Arcel will side with Charles and downplay Ellis.........

Still, Jimmy Ellis was very good in his own right........

See where you're thinkin from - and yeah Ellis was a good boxer but come on do you think Ellis would've twice beaten the great Charley Burley?? Not knocking Ellis but he really wasn't that great in his own era really - Frazier did a number on him and blasted him out.

PS MR Bill - could you give me some advice on how to attach pictures/photos to responses - I have no idea how to do it - was trying to do it on an earlier thread but couldn't figure out how?? Your assistance with this would be very much appreciated

Charley Burley was great, but he was a middleweight....... Yeah, yeah, I know he fought and beat bigger guys---Who hasn't.?.?

I know Ol' Buzzard was a better / greater fighter than Jimmy Ellis, but I think Ellis would've been competitive...... No way Charles makes Ellis look a fool in the ring...... Ellis ain't that bad.....

Ellis losing to greats like "Frazier and Ali" was a given..... They were simply a cut above Ellis.....

Oh, I too, have no clue how to paste pics from the web onto the forum..... I'm not a computer wiz like a 13 year old boy who does nothing in school but blog and screw around on a computer all day..... When I was in school we used typewriters....

Charles was simply better but Ellis was very tough, highly under rated and game as hell ..

What is it with you in Charles and "aggresive"?? :patsch

Charles was a very slick fast stick and move defensive counterpuncher. That was his style. He was not some straight forward brawler, like you love to imply

Charles wins a wide decision here..Charles skillset was in a different class. His handspeed was also much greater. I personally don't see how Ellis is going to outpoint him. Charles superior ring science and flurry of lightning hooks and long rights are going to find their target.

That is fair..... But oddly, even the '68 version of Ellis at 200+ puffed-up pounds would seem very big standing next to the 184 pound Charles of 1950..... Plus, Ellis had a quick left jab and decent speed / movement.... Charles would be tested in this dream fight..... WORD!

..mrbill...okay...how did he look compared to when he was 171 or 175...i presume you have seen him fight at those weights..also, did yoiu see him fight joe baksi when the official weigh in had him at over 175 when he was actually a few pounds lighter. i've never seen even home made films of that fight, so i'm interested in your comments...

    thanks

I've only seen small clips of Charles stuff of the late 40s..... That footage is more rare than my steaks..... But Charles was age 29 in 1950 and way too slick for the aging Louis who was a bloated 218 pounds........ That Charles was still considered prime meat there...... WORD!

IMO, Ez Charles sucked-up whatever he had left of his prime with his first 15 round loss to Marciano in 1954........ Regardless of Charles losing the nod over 15 rds, he still put on one hell of a showcase in that ring.......... Ez Charles was aged 33 yrs.........
