I had Ali winning 97-93, but don't have my precise round by round breakdown handy at the moment. I scored none of the rounds even. From long range, Ali outscored him decisively with the jab and straight right. He controlled the movement, and I felt clearly deserved credit for ring generalship. He was rarely hit cleanly on the head, and actually defended himself rather well. In close quarters, Berbick flailed away at his body, but I saw Muhammad as largely neutralizing this in the clinches with his arms blocking or stopping many of these blows short. Ali was not a rope a doping punching bag in this one, but did a surprising amount of albeit ponderous dancing, and kept it largely in the center of the ring. The three middle rounds I gave to Trevor were rounds Ali largely took off and cruised in, apparently planning for the strong finish he indeed did undertake to execute. At one point, Berbick did hurt him with a hard right to the head, but Muhammad retreated into a corner and weathered it without risk of getting stopped. Having said that I gave him my card conclusively, I'm also glad the judges went against him. He had no business being in the ring by then, and might have continued if the judges had seen it as I did. Furthermore, I was not at ringside, but scored it off the footage, a different experience than evaluating it as an eyewitness. Ali was much better against Berbick than he was for Holmes, vindicating his claim of Thyrolar overdose as the reason for his poor performance in the desert. Had he not abused Thyrolar before challenging Larry, he would still have lost decisively, but he definitely would have gone the distance. He was 20 pounds less for Holmes than Berbick, and probably would have spent very little time on the ropes. What I tried to do in scoring it was block out knowledge of his recent past, and assess that match as a self contained event.
I thought Berbick won it clearly, and so did Reg Gutteridge, and Hugh Mcilvanney, sitting ringside. "Father Time caught up with me",,"Berbick was too strong ,too aggressive.I just had the feeling I could do this thing. My mind said to do it,but I know I didn't have it out there,I did good for a 39 year old ,did allright ,considering I'll be 40 in 5 weeks" Muhammad Ali. The judges made it 99-94,99-94,97-4. I gave Ali the 5th , and the 9th , and a couple of the early rounds, could have been scored even, imo Just my opinion.
i think he was supposed to fight the winner of cooney-page if that fight came through good thing that fight never happened :-(
Ali looked like a leppa teh way he fought, my score-card was 9-1 Berbick. To be fair - Ali was shot, fat And had Parkinsons.
This ^ Its a real shame and i have Ali loosing evry round its pain staking to watch a man who has gave evrything to the ring in a fight like this.
