So i re-watched Jones-Griffin II last night and after the match there was alot of talk (including in the Larry Merchant interview) of Jones fighting Holyfield at that time. The fight would have been doable timewise. Jones didnt fight again (i believe the Griffin II fight was in August) until the following April against Virgil Hill. Holyfield did defend his titles against Bean in the fall and then didnt fight again until March against Lennox Lewis. So how do yout hink a fall 1997 fight between the 2 would have went. Jones would have been 28/29. Holyfield 35 I believe. Evander was never a big heavyweight, against Bean according to BoxRec he weighed in at 217lbs, and we could assume Jones would ahve done something similar to the Ruiz fight (beleve he weighed in at 193 and was maybe 198/199 on fight night). So what do you all think?
I would have to pick Holyfield here, to big to strong and he could catch up with Jones and land enough punches at some point in the fight to get RJJ out of there..
i love Jones he was my favorite fighter ever, but even still a '97 Holyfield is still really good. I think I might take Holyfield by MD or SD
i think jones by dec, but for my info, can u way like 170 and be a heavy. jones shuda did that, he wuda been even faster for ruiz imo
Erm according to boxrec Holyfield beat Tyson in june 97 then defended against Moorer in November. This is a prime Holyfield we are speaking about. the bionic man would overpower him. (he fought bean in 98 ) And the strength of Jones jr at heavy is because he had one fight and beat Ruiz????
Im man enough to admit I dropped the ball on that one. You're dead right. I was thinking of the Holyfield that "got old overnight" between the Bean and Lewis fights. The Holyfield that beat Tyson twice and dominated Moorer probably would have been rough for RJJ to handle. Holyfield did go almost a year without fighting though. So I guess the poll could have still worked if Jones didnt fight Hill and Holy fought in the spring. Wow. the more I think about it at that timeframe that would have been a GREAT fight.
:good we are all partial to the odd slip and the fact you come out and admit it earns my respect!:good
I love RJ but Holyfield walks through RJ's punches and KO's him late. I mean we are talking about one of the greatest warriors of all time. The man who took haymakers from Tyson and Foreman. Jones can't stand up to 12 rounds of Holy's pressure.
Holyfield was considered 'shot' before Tyson...Very similar to Ali vs. Foreman, and I don't know many that consider that to be 'prime' Ali...
I think it would have been more of Jones running from Holyfields pressure. No one in my opinion can make an argument that Jones would have even had the chance of dropping Holyfield. And at that time Evander had underrated speed for heavyweight. That fight would have just been amazing at that time though.
succinct, to the point and probably bang on jones is probably my 2nd favourite fighter ever....but i just can't see it. if holyfield has an off night though (bobby cyz) then jones could squeek it
