as both an mma and boxing fan, this is one stupid ass post....did you see the rest of that card....pretty damn good what have we been getting in boxing lately...main events where one guy is padding his record against a guy who should never be in the same right with him (for various reasons) and trash undercards
Other than Mayweather I think every reasonable opponent right now for Pacquiao has question marks? If its just resume we're talking and not ethics, the fact that Margarito was THE man at WW just 20 months ago has to come to play? Out of curiousity who would you like to see Pac fight next other than FMJ?
This PPV does suck ass with a McD's size straw.......:admin Tony Margarito is all done....... He never had great skills and his day has passed....... "The Packer" will waste him by round 8........ YAWN!!:-(( MR.BILL:hat
Solid post kirk. I'd rather pac solidify his legacy at 147 by fighting either berto or williams but I'm just a fan and I have to understand that arum has a vested interest to protect.
i respect MMA, but I have more ethical issues with Toney/Couture happening than the Margarito situation TBH..Does the UFC put on good cards? Yes. Is it economically feasible in boxing with what main event fighters expect? No. Will the UFC be able to stack cards the way they do the day their fighters demand and get more money at the highest levels? remains to be seen.
Resume wise, Berto has done far less to earn this fight than Margo.. And Williams? I can't fault Floyd, or Pac for not wanting to fight a guy who's 6'2 and can fight comfortably at mw. Fair or not that is the breaks for Pwill
20 months can be a long time in boxing though m'man, especially when one has fallen as hard as margarito has in that time (getting destroyed, getting suspended, ect) I honestly feel a fight with the likes of Williams (i realise he is now looking set on fighting Martinez, but that is recently, team pac could have made that fight) Williams, who beat Margarito back when he was actually a feared man. And if we dont want Williams because of his size, then id still say a fight against Bradley wouldnt be too bad right now. Bradley is a young, undefeated, actual champion and number one in a hot division. I think a fight with Bradley would be a decent choice for a number one p4p, and that would give Margarito another fight to regain some lost luster by beating a peer within the welterweight division... People will say Bradley or Berto are too green or whatever, but the thing is, they are some of the young studs in boxing right now, and are undefeated, and one an undefeated actual champion, and fighting him right now for Pac, and having Bradley or Berto going on to do great things in his future, imo, is a lot better then picking at perhaps a done margarito.... and a margarito who again, hasnt beat a meaningful fighter in two years. I def see where your coming from, Margarito is still a huge name, and his continual place at the top of the division for so long should count for something, i just think its bad form to go after a guy when hes obviously ripe for the picking. I would have prefered a fight with a young hungry undefeated fighter like Bradley, or if hes insisting on actually fighting the big boys, then fight someone who actually beat Margarito, and Martinez... in Williams. (i dont expect Pac to fight the big guys, its him and his team that seems to want to, so if hes going to do it, then Williams was there to take) Idk, it just seems an all to predictable and political move by someone that i wouldnt want to expect it from (although i realise arum is behind this). If this was Mayweather who just signed to fight Margarito after the last two years hes had, id be saying the same thing, and so would most of boxing. But it seems because its Pac (who im a fan of) it seems to be off limits to question who he fights. But, in all reality, Margarito is still not a horrible opponent, and i want to make sure i make clear that i dont think that Pac is scraping the bottom of the barrell by any means, Margarito is a big guy and hes gonna come to take it to Pac, but i just think there were better fights to be made, and coming off the dissapointing matchup with Clottey, let alone fight, this fight isnt really one in the right direction, IMO, especially considering how little time we might have left with this wonderful warrior.
Agree with everything, but I'm just saying Pac's in a tough spot..Williams to me is too big, I really think he belongs at mw. Bradleys interesting though, but in fairness to Pac he'd have to take a huge cut out of his pocket. (Another reason I don't want that fight(yet) is I don't think TB is ready for Pacquaio..Right now we are hurting for good young fighters, and Bradley being decimated does not entice me). You know who I've always wanted to see Pac fight, but will probably be eaten alive for saying it? Zab:bbb
haha... i thought of zab, while i wouldnt condone that fight for the same reason as this one (well, it would be even worse then the marg fight actually lol) i agree the ACTUAL fight is an interesting one based on how fun the clash would actually be. One would have to favor Pacs aggression, power, speed, stamina, and heart...... but Zab brings power like Pac has never tasted before, and speed hes rarely seen if ever, add Zabs movement and i aint gonna lie, id be tuning in. Also, this fight with margarito, the ACTUAL FIGHT itself, it could def turn out to be a good one, Margarito is huge.... its not the actual fight itself that im against, its everything else thats behind this fight. But if Margarito loses this fight, but then goes on to still be a player and beat some decent fighters after this, it will be a good win. If he gets beat by pac, loses another big fight after badly and its obvious hes not the same fighter he was, then retires.... then this fight is meaningless. anyways, ya man Pac vs Zab would be an offensive blast! There would be so much speed and power in the ring that night :deal It wouldnt be the right move for Pac for obvious reasons (zab is almost irrelevent at this point on the elite stage) but ya, the fight itself would be a blast lol. But if i had my choice Pac vs Mayweather (obviously lol) Pac vs Bradley Pac vs Berto and lastly, would be this fight right here.... i take back the williams fight because williams is simply too big, i dont want pac fighting someone whos just going to beat him cuz hes twice his size.
Pac-Judah would be awesome for about 4 rounds! Hell I'd pay to see them spar, just seeing who is quicker with the left, like an old western shootout. Amen to Williams being too big. He belongs at MW, where he can win with his skill and not his size. I'd like to see Berto fight someone-period.. Maybe I'm selling Bradley short. I see him as a hard working, above average fighter, but who does nothing exceptionally well. I hope he gets the chance to prove me wrong. He truly seems to be one of the guys willing to fight anyone, and has the drive to be the best out there. God knows we could use a lot more boxers like him right now. Good posts though, you really made me think. Kudos.
It is a disgrace. An utter disgrace. It's a Top Rank scam. Arum knows Pac is retiring soon and wants to keep all the megabucks in house so he can take his cut from Pac and his cut from Margo and not share it out with anyone else. The fight is going to do poor PPV numbers, maybe even have a poor gate (for megastar numbers I mean). And then we'll never get Mayweather vs Pac because Floyd (assume he does actually want the fight) will never budge on 60-40. And Arum will never take his cut from only 40% of the pot.
While I don't feel as strongly as the OP, I really do not like this fight. I could probably live with it being a title fight or a catch weight fight, but not with it being both. It's such a shame that Pac agreed to this, but true to what Pac always says, he really does seem to be ok fighting whoever his promoter puts in front of him. Oh well. I'll watch this fight still (it's only something like $10 in the cinema after all) but as far as I'm concerned, it has very little significance in terms of legacy. It's practically lose-lose in terms of legacy. If he wins, there a thousand ways people can criticize the fight... if he loses, well... that's just truly bad.
