The film of it is out there. Judge for yourself:

It clearly was a low blow, Schmeling overacted though. Do with it what you want.

Tunney and Dempsey thought so too, I think.

Not a bad day. Sharkey figured the weight would give him an advantage against Schmeling. It still wasn´t enough- :hey

    In a way yes.

I want to illustrate the fact that fighters from earlier eras do not benefit from the same detailed analysis of the circumstances surounding their careers, and even the timescale gets lost.

Sharkey is rated as a very good fighter in his prime.

But not as a great one. And I think he deserves that. The 30s were rated as a subpar time for hws for a long time. Mostly becaust it was the time after Dempsey and before Louis. IMO that´s undeserving. Schmeling, Sharkey, Baer are all great fighters.

Certainly they were very good fighters, Sharkey is a particular favorite of mine, Schmeling too but all three lost a little too many times to good but not great fighters to earn a pass over the kiles of Tunney, Liston and Frazier even though peak v peak they might fare ok. Just my opinion.

Hm, I don´t think you can rank Tunney over those three. His body of work is just too tiny. And I don´t think Liston is that far ahead of Schmeling and Sharkey, if at all. Frazier is a bit difficult because he is part of the Ali myth and thus get´s a pass for some subpar performances or not beeing in shape and such things.

Tunney was a class above Sharkey, mainly due to his rugged determination and calculating approach to fighting. I believe had they ever fought, it would come down to Tunney's sheer determination to win the bout in the late rounds.
