Haye has no glass jaw but he's too vulnerable to last and dominate for a longer time in the HW division. The good thing (for Haye) is that he and his manager are completely aware of reality and act accordingly. They carefully pick opponents which are closing in on 40 years and are not well known to be dangerous punchers. They are minimizing the risk for Haye to get caught by a big shot which would happen sooner or later if he was more active and especially against younger, more dangerous opposition. They know their best bet is to quickly make some money to retire on against over-the-hill low-risk opponents and get out before he gets exposed. Haye has said multiple times his biggest fear in boxing is losing. That explains his choice of opposition at HW.
I think he looked at least a bit shocked. He was doing what you describe, backing Ruiz up, but Ruiz caught him a couple of times as I remember. I'll try to find the fight, cause I'm not sure of this, it's just what I remember from the fight besides the brutal beating.
Holyfield was knocked out by Riddick Bowe, Bowe would KO Haye 100%. He was also stopped on his feet against James Toney when he was 40 years old. Haye doesn't have a glass jaw but his chin isn't all that solid either. The Thompson loss doesn't mean much, but he was dropped and was also down against Mormeck, and super middleweight journeyman Mock. Barrett should have been credited with a KD against him and Solis stopped him as an amateur.
His chin isn't glass but it isn't good either... average chin. A lot of what dropped him at CW was temple shots which can be partly due to dehydration from struggling to make the weight
He was almost knocked down in the first, imo he should have taken a count himself because it looked like the ropes saved him. I'm astonished that with so many people despising him on this board that I've never seen anybody else mention it. Haye doesn't have very good punch resistance. It's just a fact.
Fiction He ran out of steam against Carl Thompson Against Ruiz he sat him down twice in the first, then took his time and calmed down His chin hasn't really been tested by a heavyweight yet, and like I always say "Innocent until proven guilty"
Haye's chin is nowhere near as fragile as most are trying to claim. The Thompson stoppage could be attributed primarily to exhaustion. Secondly the he looked like he had been hurt worse in the Mormeck fight than he actually was due to the fact that he slipped on a pad in the corner. He was definitely hurt by the initial left hook but the follow up right hand barely grazed him. A number of ringside observers would attest to the fact he slipped. Whats more is that he had enough of his wits about him to take a knee so as not to fall victim to a follow up barrage when he was vulnerable and off balance in the corner. Mormeck also landed a number of shots in the remainder of the round which Haye took quite well. These knockdowns and the aforementioned Mock kd could also be attributed partially to the fact that he struggled to make cruiser(he had been talking about moving up for years). He is yet to be seriously hurt at hw, the monte barrett kd was not serious(also keep in mind that barrett has a little pop considering he had david tua down recently, albeit an old tua). While im not saying Haye has an iron chin by any means, it is not as weak as some, including himself, as someone also mentioned, would have you believe. In actual fact he likes to publicise these perceived punch resistance issues. iv heard him say a number of times in build ups about how his fights are exciting because the result is likely to be a ko either way. This is part of his fight selling strategy.
Boy these excuses trying to talk up Haye's chin are just as pathetic as the Klitschko fans trying to explain away Wlad's vulnerability when getting hit. Look Haye has a lot of things going for him, he's a talented offensive boxer. He has many strengths but taking a solid HW punch is not one of them. Stop with the "slipping" and "gassing" excuses already.
Just rewatched the fight. Ruiz got caught alot pressing forward, but he hit Haye flush a couple of times. At the end of rd 1 where Haye bounced off the ropes, and got many decent shots in during the first part of the fight, like rd3 with a double jab and a right and rd 4 which he made close with a good ending. Also Ruiz landed his jab easier than I first thought, Haye could still learn some things before the Wlad fight, for starters he should stop trying to dodge all the punches, cause if to many hits him he'll go down, and chances are Wlad will only need one big punch for that.
I don't fancy him lasting against the Klits and I want to win. His hands being low will cost him dearly if he fights them. As Wlad said "Pizza face with ketchup"
His heavyweight wins have been against less than stellar opposition. Against arguably his best opponent, Carl Thompson, he fell apart. He's been down too many times, also against a super-middleweight/light heavyweight in Mock. I'd have a punt on Harrison knocking him cold if the fight should be made.
