Agreed. Chavez was stupid to fight at a weight he had only campaigned at 8 or more times up to that point in his career. If it was 20 or so, that would have been understandable but 8 was not enough.

Also, 2 pounds makes the world of difference. Chavez was a God at 140, but at 142 he was a different person.

Whitaker at 135 and 140 was a completely different animal to the slower less active welterweight/light middleweight. At 135 you got your hands FULL with sweet pea. He defuses Chavez everytime and won their match up 10-2. Chaves wasn't at his best but Sweet Pea wasn't either.

Quit trying to be smartass you Sweet Pea nuthugger!!! You know damn well he didnt fight any world class fighter Marty Jakubowski,Bruce Pearson,Silvio Rojas dont count these were all tune ups just to keep busy. Would be different if he was fight the Buddy Mcgirts of the world(at welter) Chavez might have only been 2 pounds over the JW limit but Sweet Pea was closer to the Welter limit! Go twist the facts to somebody else smart guy:-( You know damn well WHittaker went on to make several defenses and score big wins at Welter, where as Chavez never had any significant wins there.

Chavez fans simply can't face the facts that Chavez was in as good a shape for Whitaker as he had been for any fight since Taylor and he got his ass handed to him.

The two extra pounds took NOTHING from his performance. He was no slower against Whitaker and no weaker than he would have been at 140. His workrate in the Whitaker fight was EXACTLY THE SAME (in terms of punches thrown) as it was in the Taylor fight. And he was covering more territory searching for Whitaker in the ring to boot.

Whitaker was perhaps stronger in comparison to Chavez than he would have been at a fight at the lower weights, but Whitaker was quicker at the lower weights and was no weakling in any case.

Chavez got so little done in terms of body work (if you exclude Whitaker's thighs and hips) that a fight at a lower weight wouldn't have meant much in the way of difference anyway. Chavez didn't come close to imposing himself on Whitaker in their fight and there's hardly anything to suggest that he will against a faster, quicker Whitaker.

Chavez didn't have the physical advantages he did at 130-140 and was slightly past prime, Whitaker did have more physical advantages at 147 than he would have at 135-140 -thats the issue not the fact Chavez wasnt in shape at 142. But Pea was also slightly past prime himself, maybe not as much but past prime all the same

None the less WHitaker would always be wrong for Chavez and was the superior boxer of the 2

Shortly afterwards Chavez lost to Randall. A fine fighter, but in my opinion, no where near Whitakers class though. If Chavez lost to Randall & was floored for the first time. Isin't it obvious Chavez' skills were deteriorating?

I didn't see this round as close at all. I thought Whitaker landed the harder and cleaner shots (nut shot included :D ).

Chavez wasn't in the same mental and physical shape for Randall as he was for Whitaker. I think that's pretty obvious if you watch the fights back to back.

    :deal

Anyone suggesting that Whitaker wouldn't beat Chavez prime for prime needs their head examining. That was about as decisive a schooling as you can get. It's like the people who claim Liston would have given Ali massive problems two years prior.
