My best pick of Top-20 "Heavy" champs from 1887-2011. WORD!

You could deduce it from Bert Cooper not in my list that at least Fitz would not have made the 45.
recently I made an even longer list (some top 65) which does not include neither one of Sullivan , Fitzsimmons nor Cooper.
Somehow it includes Liston (the top 65) .
Maybe I might find a place for Sullivan there some day , but not Fitzsimmons.
Sullivan may make my top 80 though , and may not.

 

I thought Buddy Baer had potential, but his lack of defense is what killed him...... Buddy had great size and power, but his skill and defense sucked weenie...... The rematch loss to Joe Louis was embarrassing for Buddy Baer........

I'm on the side reviewing my tape from '81 of "Tim Spoon hammering Alonzo Ratliff." Spoon is age 23 and a tight 205 pounds..... GEEZ!

Spoon's 205 didn't last long....... By May of '83, against Holmes in Vegas, Spoon was 219........

I know that Tim Spoon became a lazy slob later on and wasted some good yrs by dining at Burger King, but when he was young and fit, Spoon was a good fighter who could hang in there with the best from any era........ From '83 to '86, Spoon only lost to Larry Holmes, Pinky Thomas and Bones Smith.......

Holmes was too seasoned in 1983 for the greenish Spoon. But the fight itself was epic..

Thomas was peaked and fought the fight of his career in beating Spoon in 1984 on HBO..

Spoon was depressed and whipped before the opening bell with Smith in 1986 on HBO...

Aside from them blemishes, Tim Spoon was the goods back then.........

I agree, Spoon would get patterson out of there at some point.. Maybe late like when he finished Bruno.. Patterson can't hurt Spoon and Spoon can hurt him. Patterson would be game but out gunned...

 

Johnson was a lousy champion also. He has no business in the top 3, let along top 10 in my book, unless you are factoring in his social/historic significance.

Vitaly has nowhere near the resume to be as high as that.

In Decemeber 1962, the top 40 boxing writers produce their list of the best heavies of the past 50 years.

Dempsey was number 1
Joe Louis was number 2
Johnson was number 3

Rocky Marciano was number 6

I got these from an article only the four fighters above were mentioned. Does anybody have the article. I think we should agree to rate the fighters before Ali by the 1962 rating. lets face it none of us have seen the fighters prior to 1960 fight. So I think using the top 40 writers opinon for the period is the fairest way to rate the fighters?
