Who has made light of it? Understanding the source of something isn't excusing it.

If I met a 80 year old man and he said some ignorant crap am I going to lose my mind or realize that he is from a different time? If I met an Asian man from the countryside of PI and he though I grew a tail at night or could dance and play sports would I be angry at him or realize that he hasn't had interaction with people from certain backgrounds?

One component of racism is the hurtful words. The other component is the lack of knowledge/experience on the speaker's part. Understanding that doesn't mean you are "excusing" it. It helped me feel kind of sorry to people making such ignorant statements.
