87 years ago on Sept 1. 1923, a boxing legend was born. 41 years ago and 3 days, we lost this ATG due to a tragic plane crash.

Pay your respects here to Rocky Marciano

Here is the best ever highlight video made of Rocky Marciano

It sends shivers down your spine to think that he might be alive and comentating on fights today if not for that plane crash.

Wonder what he would have thought about Tyson and Lewis.

    I could hazard a guess.

I think that he would have liked Tyson and formed a friendship with him. As Tysons career unraveled he would have become more critical of him, even if he did not say anything publicaly.

He would have liked Lewis's quiet and respectfull nature.

He would have acknowledged both as his superiors as long as they had been publicaly respectfull, which they would have been.

Where he would have been critical of both is in that he tended to question a fighter whose heart/chin were in doubt. He set the standard for a killer prety high in mental terms.

I love Marciano's commentary on those 'Main Events'...One of the most insightful analysts you could ever want to listen to.

    RIP Champ.

Do you think he'd rate Tyson over Lewis over those two losses he suffered?

If I could meet any fighter in history, it would be Rocky Marciano. He was the first fighter I could ever call my favorite fighter and he still is my favorite. I just don't see what's not to like about how he was. A killer in the ring and always the most polite and respectful person before and just after the fight. Obviously he had his faults (a bad temper and a bit of a womanizer) but those are nothing compared to other champs and people. If I could go back in time and change history, one of the things I would do is prevent Rocky from getting on that small plane back sometime on August 31, 1969.

Happy Birthday Rocky....I admire many fighters but you are one of my favorites, not many fighters like you, in fact not many men like you. Say hello to Joe Louis and the rest from ESB

    :happy

I could do the right thing and try stopping WWII sooner, but I'd probably try stopping Rocky from going on that plane too. I would obviously have to think about it, and in the end I might do something for humanity. But I'd really consider it... once I found Rocky Marciano it was like finding the real Rocky. I don't have to admire this fictional character anymore? There's a real man in the flesh. And he wasn't the most talented, most gifted, or the prettiest but he was the most determined fighter to ever step in the squared circle. Non-stop punching and a will to win. Truly something rare and special in not just boxing but sports.

Funny you say that because I just uploaded some Marciano Main Event Commentaries on youtube.

I am a fan of the underdog, and if there was a guy who echoed that sentiment more than him, I don't know of him. He was smallish, awkward, bereft of natural gifts.....yet somehow came out of the game the model of ring perfection, almost in spite of himself. In that vein, he is a fascinating character study, and one truly worthy of respect.
