I cannot name one other sport that has as much contempt for it's own fanbase than boxing does. All I ever hear from industry insiders is how fans should shut up as they have no idea what they are on about. Furthermore, other industry insiders (who shall go unnamed for the sake of ESB et al) have threatened various websites with legal action for giving fans a platform to voice an opinion about the very sport they enjoy so much. After various others in the line before him, Barry Hearn (PM me if you'd like to sue me for having an opinion) is the latest to have a pop at the much-maligned 'internet fans' who are treated with disdain as if they are the sole horrific blot on the whiter-than-white boxing industry. These 'internet fans' are the very same fans that line the said insiders' pockets by buying tickets, merchandise, PPVs and television subscriptions.

Time and time again I hear the same thing, which usually goes along the lines of 'if you have never boxed, your opines count for **** all'. This sort of stance amuses the hell out of me as you'd never hear a musician say 'well, you can't play piano or the cello, so your opinion means jack ****'. Imagine if Elton John started saying **** like that after poor record sales:lol:. He'd be labelled as a small-minded, ignorant, pretentious ****, and rightly so.

Boxing is struggling for attention as it is, and then you get the people 'in the know' trying to subjugate and belittle the very people who are lining their pockets and keep the interest in the sport ticking over. It's an utter farce. I mean, how do people feel the sport would cope without the much-maligned boxing forums? Personally, I think forums disappearing would be one of the worst things that could happen to the sport. Prior to joining the ESB forum, I actually didn't know that much about forums and thought they were for the sort of people who play World Of Warcraft all day long under the guise of a purple dragon with epilepsy named 'Sprotan' or some ****. Anyway, I've since found out that my initial thoughts on forums were unfounded, misguided and, simply, daft. Since joining this forum I would say I have definately become an even bigger fan of the sport than I ever was before joining. I have found out a great deal about the history of the sport and the sport itself and there are many fights and fighters I probably would never have watched or paid any attention to if it wasn't for the 'internet fans' on forums such as this. Additionally, I would never have spent as much money on boxing as I do now if it wasn't for this forum.

To all of the industry insiders who think they can **** on their own fans all of the time: There is absolutely nothing wrong with debate, whether at work, down the pub, in bed or online. To all of the insiders who think making disparaging remarks towards and silencing 'internet fans' will be good for the sport (aka good for their vested interests and investments), you haven't got a ****ing clue what you're on about:thumbsup.

    Well said.

After all, it is the fans that pay their wages.

Perhaps they ought to start appreciating them or get a job doing security at an old Woolworths store or something.

I'd love to sit down and talk boxing with these so-called 'insiders'.

I think I'd have them perplexed and stammering within about two minutes.

A lot of people in a lot of areas are having trouble adjust1ng to the good and bad the Internet brings and are criticising it rather than trying to use it as the positive tool it can be. Maybe over the next 10-20 years, as people who were brought up with the Internet as a fact of life start filling the "top" positions in boxing, we'll be a change in attitudes?

Yep. I think Bellew especially can attest to how an internet forum can be beneficial to getting your name out there and getting more fans. There are obviously positives and negatives with forums and the internet in general, but the positives far outweigh the negatives in this case.

Promoters and people within boxing need to embrace it rather than see it as a problem. Some promoters have seen the benefits the internet offers and have acted accordingly. Vip Boxing and Hatton promotions each have their own video streaming set-up to show past shows, and the latter streams live shows and sells copies of their cards on DVD. Maloney and Warren have their own Youtube page and show exclusive footage of fights, press conferences, interviews etc. More can still be done, but promoters need to look beyond the small amount of negatives and focus on the many positives.

And very good OP Losfer :good

Fantastic post and all you've said is what's wrong with boxing. I normally like Barry Hearn but I thought he was bang out of order when he said what he did last week.

i agree but hearn was right to a point , a haye - harrison fight isnt for boxing fans that watch boxing talk about boxing and know boxing its for the man on the street , its a heavyweight title contest between two mouthy brits and has sky platform to promote it

to put it simply this is a crossover fight even though unlike past such fights the quality of one of the fighters dosent warrant this .

Hagman, surely the sport should try and appeal to its fans. It isn't just Haye-Harrison, we get fed lots of uninspiring, meaningless fights.

Most 'insiders' I have come across are very helpful. Just recently I have been in touch with two Latin promoters who have basically wiped my arse with how helpful they have been.
