Passed Welter, Duran did'nt have the legs to cut the ring off on anyone with decent movement.......his losses passed his victory over Leonard in Montreal indicate that. That Duran was the equivalent of the Bernard Hopkins who's been fighting for the last several years. Pit Hopkins against fighters with speed, movement, or both, and he's going to get beaten (Jermaine Taylor and Joe Calzaghe. Pit him in against a good but stationary type thats going to be right in front of you, and he still has the ability to disect and make you look like a fool. (Tarver and Pavlik) ........the same could be said of Duran back when he was fighting past his prime.
both pAST PRIMES - DURAN PUT NO EFFORT INTO TRAINING OR THE FIGHT FOR THAT MATTER - ALL IT DID WAS GIVE LEONARD THE WIN OVER THE SERIES - ONLY 1AND 2 WILL BE TALKED ABOUT - OH AND THE FIGHT WAS TERRIBLE TOO HAVING TOWELS WRAPPED ROUND THEM LIKE OLD MEN AND ALL
anyone who says no is a Duran fan trying to excuse his loss. The second fight was more significant than the first since it demonstrated how Duran who knew who he was fighting, had no answer for Ray's movement. Duran will always say he was out of shape against Ray in the rematch, but the fact is Ray moved in the second fight and Duran never had answers for that with Benitez in 1982 and Ray in the rematch. I should say he had no answer for speed since that is how Wilfred beat him in 1982, a fight where Duran should have been motivated, it would have yielded him another title at a higher weight.
No,but Leonard did win the rubber match to take 2 out of 3. If Leonard doesn't get sucked into fighting Durans fight the first time, leonard out boxes Duran every time they fight.
That excuse for Duran was bought which is the surprising thing. Had Hearns said after Hagler he did not train at all people would have said yeah right sure. And everytime Duran lost to a great he said the same thing that he didn't train. Against Ray, Benitez,Hearns etc. Yet when he fought mediocre guys like Moore and Barkley he miraculously trained? Why would he not train for the greats who had titles he would win? Yet he trained for the easier fights.
Yes. SRL fought with his head instead of with his balls, and a much truer indication of their talent levels played itself out.
Nah, not really. Both guys, especially Duran, were pretty far past it by the end of 1989. Duran did pull off that win against Barkley earlier that year, but I have a tough time calling this win "significant". It was also quite possibly the worst big fight I've ever seen.
Jesus ESB is full of ******s. The thread starter is talking about the third fight between the two not the second.
They fought outdoors in near freezing weather......did'nt do an old man like Duran any good........add to that that Leonards cornermen were smarter than Duran's.....Leonard's corner wrapped him with quilts inbetween rounds, while there was no such thing with Duran's. .......Duran looked tight throughout the whole fight, partly because Leonard was just faster, but also because the freezing weather did'nt allow for Duran to get loose.
