Agree, definitely not a close fight. Started watching in round 4 and I only gave Lorenzo the 12th. Round 11 was to me a very clear Sturm round.

Landing punches on gloves doesn't give you points. Lorenzo's stamina and accuracy was atrocious. He should have gone to the body more, cause when he did he managed to rip Sturm with some right hooks. Then, he would just switch off, let Sturm take the centre of the ring and let Sturm, very predictably, hit him with the punch he uses 90% of the time with his hands down. He let the fight slip in a similar way against Marquez and Sylvester. Strange, crude fighter and not one I particularly like.

Like one poster said; Sturm should have thrown the right hand more. Lorenxo was begging for it all night with his left hand moving up and down/blocking the jab. Sometimes Lorenzo was very tired against the ropes and would almost certainly not have punched back, yet Sturm hesitated. Sturm should be lucky that his opponents stamina sucked too.

If he only had better stamina and more variety I would pick him over a lot of the top MWs. Shame, because you could see by the way he throws his punches that he's one of the most technical boxers at the higher weight speaking of punching technique alone. Good left uppercuts, body shots and right hands when he actually bothers to throw them.

Williams outworks him if he drops the "boxing" **** he did against Cintron. Unsure about Pavlik's state of health. I think his careful style could work against Martinez actually. Martinez didn't like the jab of Pavlik in the middle rounds and Sturm is one of the best jabbers around. And he also doesn't take the risks that Martinez the counter puncher likes to capitalise on. Still I would pick Sergio due to stamina, will and power. I will have to see Pirog, N'Dam and Golovkin against better opponents (Jacobs isn't on that level yet) before I judge their chances. Golovkin's style would be a nightmare to Sturm I feel.

Yeap, I had it wide too... a couple of mercy rounds for Lorenzo who was really really terible.

Don't think Sturm will get big names in the next 2-3 fights. he plans to stay in Germany and 'make a name'. As we know, not everyone wants to come to Germany, especially if they are big names and have other options.

So get used to Zbiks and Sylvesters of this world.

In terms of overall control of the fight, it wasn't close. Sturm had more clear rounds, and won his several clear rounds far more convincingly than Lorenzo won his few clear ones.

A couple of very close rounds went Lorenzo's way on my scorecard and RightCross' based on Sturm doing very little and basically conceding them to the sloppy and tiring Lorenzo when he easily could have put a punctuation mark on each round with his jab had he increased and maintained his intensity late.

It's interesting; both RC and I arrived at the same score but we swapped two of the late rounds (9 and 10, I think) - one of us gave the nod to Lorenzo and then Sturm and the other vice-versa.

At the end of the day my scorecard can be filed under "close but clear". The right man definitely won, and it's understandable how a few of those close rounds where Sturm did little (the ones that tended to be awarded to Lorenzo in this thread for trying to press the action) wound up going his way, taking two very time-honored judge-influencing boxing traditions into account: the home crowd cheering every time their man does something eye-catching, and the "take the title from the champion" adage.

It was rounds 10 and 11 that we had opposite scores on. They were close enough really that you could argue both to Sturm, or both to Lorenzo (which could either push it closer to the official cards at 116-112 one way, or to a 114-114 draw the other way). It's a matter of pick your poison - Lorenzo the active but ineffective aggressor, or Sturm the accurately jabbing but largely inert human statue.

People don't realize how little really separate "close" from "wide" in boxing scores on the ten-point must system - even in championship bouts.

I don't agree. Sylvester fight was, for example, a close but very clear fight. But it was a fight... Lorenzo was a no show here... and you can count the clean punches he landed on one hand (he probably had as many head as hand punches). Even on those rounds wher Sturm was not as active, he was outlanding Lorenzo on clean efective punches. Not to mention that he was chasing him around. There were three rounds that could go to Lorenzo - 1st, last, and 9 or 10, don't remember anymore. But even that would be based on 'activity'. The class difference was more than evident. Lorenzo was like a slow motion even for a rusty Sturm. He was even worse than I remember him against Marquez and Sylvester... at least there he fell apart after a few strong rounds at the beginning. Here he didn't show anything.

Anyway, it was a bit disappointed in the end. Sturm was stuck in one gear (third I would say) and wouldn't change up. Lorenzo was ready to go from the 6th onwards.

Lorenzo won both of the first two rounds before Sturm won several in a row. You don't even think the second could have gone to him? :think Sturm did better in it than in the opening few minutes, but came on especially strong starting in the third.

We are in agreement that Sturm could have gone for the stoppage without too much risk and probably gotten it. Lorenzo was throwing arm punches in the second half, which is why it left a bitter taste in my mouth to give him the occasional round when Sturm's non-punching just could not be rewarded.

would have to look at the second again to be honest. But I thought the class difference was starting to be very very evident already in the 2nd round. And by class differences I don't mean anything hypthetical, but based on the action in the ring.

Yeah, I also had the feeling that Sturm could have stopped Griffin, Sylvester and Gevor in the second half also, but for some reason (one of them is that he doesn't know how to cut off the ring, and doesn't use his right hand) he wouldn't step up his game.

One poster noted it here - after you get a jab in the face, you don't see that easy other punches coming. That's why it is such a shame he doesn't throw the right after the jab. Sdunek was also complaining about it, albeit not too loud... well, Sturm pays him, I wouldn't be loud there too.

Honestly I won't be shocked if he does drop anchor and refuse to defend his title outside Germany.

I won't really begrudge him for it, either. It's his best chance of building himself into a lucrative brand during whatever good years he has left, and he deserves a taste of success after years of hard work IMO far more than his countryman Marco Huck for instance (who is able to rise to the top on sheer raw power alone). Sturm is far superior to Huck in p4p terms and while he is guilty of not producing full 12-round efforts he does exhibit more thought and effort in the ring (and certainly in training) than does Huck. Sturm has paid his dues and earned himself a quiet reign at home - so long as the challengers are reasonable and not "Milton Nunez" types (who the WBA recently gave an inexplicable shot at their "interim" title against Gennady Golovkin).

yeap, the plan is to stay in German in the next couple of fights. Sylvester rematch, Zbik, and Mahir Oral are probably good guesses.

All probably clear unanimous decisions for Sturm, with no urgency or attempt to finish. :yep

Yeah, I'm curious how he plans to sell himself to the market. He doesn't knock people out and without the right partner, his fights are really dull (and I enjoy technical fights!). He had a full German national football team at the front row, but I doubt they enjoyed it immensly and doubt that anyone will come again (excluding Podolski).

There's one positive side though... he doesn't sound like an insecure bragging kid he used to be during the Universum spell. It was time to grow up though...

I'm talking about likely the last 3 catchweights of Cotto, Margarito and then Lorenzo but since Lorenzo lost, i don't think Pacquiao will try and fight a middleweight unless Sturm agrees to a 155 catchweight.
