If De La Hoya was able to outbox Tito for three quarters of a fight. Napoles would befuddle Trinidad for a UD victory.
Tito gets outboxed all night long. Napoles had a great chin at welter so Trinidad's puncher's chance is not too good IMO.
I think they would based on these 3 things: 1. Napoles was never a great defensive fighter 2. Tito would walk right at him 3. Napoles wouldn't be the type to run away and play safety first So there's going to be some fireworks imo.
I will say though that Jose will be hitting Tito more than vice versa. Hence the Napoles stoppage by around the 8th.
Napoles would have decked, cut and busted up poor Tito in a manner that would have shocked most modern day fans. This would be a huge victory for Mantequilla..a stoppage in 8.
Napoles was nicknamed Mantequilla for other things besides his punching power..lol..he was so slick and hard to hit. His lone weakness, the tendency to cut around the eyes shouldn't be confused with him having slack defensive abilities.
Trinidad was a huge welterweight though. He could be in there with a Carlos Monzon and not be dwarfed they way Napoles was. Napoles was slick considering how aggressive he was, but he could be hit, rarely with the significant punches though. It's understated how good his chin was. I can't recall ever seeing him knocked down or shaken up badly. Tito is there to be hit, and Napoles is a sharper, more versatile hitter although Trinidad could put together punches well as long as he had an opponent standing right in front of him, which Napoles would not do. But he would have uncomfortable moments in there against Trinidad, even in winning. Some might bring up the Whitaker fight, but Whitaker was old and he couldn't punch.
Napoles' pinpoint accuracy...his ability to snake through a bomb through a guy's defense would have proved deadly to Tito, who was capsized a few times by fighters far inferior to Napoles. Mantequilla could grind your face to hamburger, like he did to Cokes, lacerate with a blizzard of accurate shots, like against Pruitt, or just take you out with one shot like he did with Lopez. He'd have done much damage to Tito before stopping him. Tito was there to be hit, and he wouldn't have had any ordinary fighter there in front of him.
He is not a great defensive fighter. He is an aggressive technician really. And no matter how good your defence is you are getting hit. TGA summe dit up well.
