Marcel was on the nominee ballot for the IBHOF this year. Next year, careful evaluation of available footage by the voters could well tip the scales in his favor. (I wouldn't be at all surprised at him and Serrano entering together.)

I write them down in a note book I have. Been through three. I just sort of remember how the fights play out.

His pinata-isation of Gomez probably. I think Marcel performed pretty well in all the fights he's featured in on film, but there's no doubt his demolition of Gomez stands out.

I dont know how good Gomez is but in that footage he does nothing at all, whether he is good and Marcel stops him from doing anything or is he jkust the level below?

I prefer the Shibata fight as Shibata is always trying for new ways to win and Marcel keeps shutting him down

This is why I love Classic, I get to learn so much about fighters and find out about ones I didn't know about. I hope more footage of him pops up I love watching skilled fighters. Still credit to Duran, he was only 18! I'm going to see as much of the fights he had with Duran & Arguello as I can. Hopefully more of his fights too.

Gomez was past his prime by this stage. He definitely has skills, you can see that early on, but yeah, it becomes a beat down after a few rounds.

Interestingly, Gomez has wins against Dejesus and Cervantes. It'd be interesting to see those fights. I take those results with a grain of salt given Venezuelan judging. Even Gomez against Marcel got a draw on the Venezuelan judge's card. :patsch

The Shibata fight is a real good one. Marcel is a demon in the last third of it.

There's 4 known bouts with Marcel out there against Arguello, Duran, Kuniaki Shibata and Antonio Gomez. All four are essential viewing if you're into skilled fighters :good

Thanks. I'm a Duran fan so I might end up getting the Marcel-Duran fight(Hopefully I do). As far as the others I'll try to watch them anyway I can.

Sweet i'd certainly have him in the top-tier for that timeframe, he would have at least a good chance of beating anyone.

As for Gomez, greg, the Saijo fight is the one to get to see a good performance from him, though Saijo was looking a bit worn from a number of tough fights by that point. He looks a good smooth fighter there, but it's tough to reconcile that with the Marcel performance where he shows little sharpness or invention.I've talked with Mike Delisa about him before, trying to find out about the Cervantes fights etc and the book on him seemed to be that he was a Ruben Olivares style partier with little dedication. He was already losing non-title fights from the minute he picked up the belt.

Great from what I've seen, though I need to get hold of some more tapes of the guy at some point. Arguello was very green when Marcel got to him, though I got the feeling that he could have made the victory more emphatic if necessary.

Arguello himself said Marcel showed him he needed more than power to win, and inspired him to improve.

I don't think Arguello was that green just lacked the confidence and drive he would in his next title shot. Also I think Marcel did his best in there, he was knackered by the half way point.

    Yes, indeed.
