THE first-ever world title fight between two Scots could be on following Ricky Burns' win over Rocky Martinez to take the WBO super-featherweight crown.
Promoter Frank Warren is considering making history by putting Burns up against South Queensferry boxer Paul Appleby, 23.
But the first thing Burns wants is his world title belt.
The Puerto Rican he defeated at the Kelvin Hall in an epic 12-rounder on Saturday night returned home with the belt as it remains his property.
Another will be specially made for the new champ and Burns will receive his in Manchester on September 18.
Warren will plot what happens after that.
He said: "Appleby impressed me when he won the British featherweight title. He was much younger then and lost a year out of his boxing life recently.
"Now he's very hungry, has time on his side and that there could be a huge, all Scottish fight somewhere down the line."
On his Martinez bout in Glasgow, Burns said: "I made the mistake of going square on in the first round and he hit me with a peach of a right hand to knock me down.
"As soon as he caught me I thought, 'what's going on here?' "But I showed the heart of a champion to get back up and go on and win the fight.
"He actually caught me a few times but I have a good chin and took the shots well, although I had to grit my teeth in every round."
Martinez had previously been unbeaten in 25 fights and Burns was a 5-1 underdog with the bookies before Saturday's fight.
But the 27-year-old from Coatbridge insists he never doubted he could move up in class. He said: "I've just sent out a big statement to everyone who doubted me throughout my career.
"I'm always confident in my own ability. The better the opponent in front of me, the better I am going to be.
"At times in the build-up to this fight it felt like just me and my camp thought I would win.
"But the boxing critics who said I would lose just spurred me on.
"I've wanted to a win world title since I was a wee boy and it is just an amazing feeling to have finally done it."

To be honest i'd be very suprised if Paul wanted to fight Ricky,Burns totally outclassed paul in sparring a month ago in his own gym and didnt want to come to glasgow for more sparring.Burns will outclass paul before stopping him imo.

It's not a fight that makes sense to either man really.

Appleby has had 18 months off and returned against a scrub on Saturday, Burns has just knocked over Martinez.

Would be like Froch taking on Dilks or something

I would say that was down to experience and age more than anything else Billy. Age for Age it would be a very good fight and will be in a few years time.

What has appleby done to deserve a world title shot? Don't get me wrong it would be an interesting fight but what's the point winning the world title to then fight domestic opposition?

Is all i can say about Burns is that he has the "tools" to be very very good, way better than what he is at the moment, just lacks a bit of one punch power but i love the way he digs in the left hook to the body and then immediately throws a jab out, very classy.

Burns would have far too much for Appleby. Pointless fight, in my opinion.

Very good performance by Burns the other night, made Martinez look average in there.

I'd let Paul develop a bit more, he needs to be brought on at the right pace and a world title tilt just now may be too much too soon. A couple of years down the road I reckon he will be ready to do it off his own back but he will likely go for a lonsdale shot with his next few bouts. He has plenty of talent and his defence was looking tighter on Saturday.

His fight is up on Warrens Website now for those who didnt see it (the audio doesnt work for 1st 30 seconds or so)
