Roy may get seriously hurt, Dempsey had speed power, killer instinct and was mean. Roy gets flattened
What happened when Dempsey was facing skilled boxers? He somehow appeared slow and not as aggressive, as he did against crude slow cruiserweights/heavyweights. And this wasn't just the Tunney bouts, but a younger, more prime Dempsey too.
I think you can say that of all fighters..at least all aggressive fighter...they look slower when they go up aganst slicksters. Maybe smouth boxers can look just as fast, but thats largely a style thing. having said that, Dempsey still looked pretty good taking out Carpenter..yes he got caught a few times..but he dominated the fight all in all.
I considered Gibbons..thing is...the guy had a record of 47 wins with 2 loses when he fought dempsey. its not like the gibbons was shot at the time..he went on to beat many more fighters after the dempsey fight, finally, i dont think dempsey looked that bad in the fight... unless we are counting not KO'ing a guy as looking as bad. You can disagree as much as you want. Anyone who knows about Carpentier from film and contemporary reports knows what a poor boxer he was.
...Career a product of a string of flukes maybe? And if Dempsey wasn't elite, then show me where Jones proved he was an elite HEAVYWEIGHT. Hey, maybe right in line with these other H2H threads we've been seeing, someone might want to put up a Ruiz VS Dempsey one.
You don't need flukes when you face farmers and Greb leftovers. Who said Jones was an elite HW, he only had 1 fight at the weight beating a HW as good as anyone Dempsey beat, but then again most of his LHW opposition was also as big as most of Dempsey's HW opposition. Still Jones is obviously by far the best boxer Dempsey would ever step in the ring. Dempsey always looked like a ******ed kid with a rubix cube when he was trying to solve the skilled boxer puzzle
