Why do people think Marciano had such a great chin?

I am curious because He's been shook by punchers who weren't even top 100 punchers, and then guy like Holy, who took tons of big punches are discarded as having a chin not as good as Rocky. Walcott wasn't a big puncher, neither was heavyweight Moore. Foreman, Tyson, Lewis, Cooper, Stewart, and Moorer were all big punchers, and Evander took their punches very well.
How many huge punchers did Rocky face to earn him such accolades as having an ATG chin?

Uh, Archie Moore has a kncokout record, I believe. In any event, it was officially over 70 and he always claimed it was really in the 100's. His power carried up very nicely at heavy.

Waclott was not an ATG puncher, but he was a good one. He kncoked down Louis twice int their first fight, and kncoked out Ezzzard Charles.

In any event, both were flash knockdowns. Other than tha, Marciano never hit the deck in 49 fights.

He took a flush shot from Walcott and got up.

He took many shots from Louis, and kept walking forward.

He took many flush shots. I have seen them on film, and he just keeps walking forward undeterred every time. Thats one of the attributes that made him one of the greatest heavyweights in history. He just kept coming forward and pounding away, no matter how much you were hitting him

Good question. Marciano was essentially like the HW Willie Pep and he was knocked down both times in his career that he was hit flush and neither man to do it could be considered much of a puncher at heavyweight. Charles could hit but aside from the nose injury, he barely touched the slick Marciano. His chin is mostly unproven as far as being above average but if anything was proven, it's that he could be hurt like any man but by light heavyweights.

Archie has the most knockout s of anyone at 131, but he wasn't a great puncher at HW when he took on the big boys.

Louis isn't considered to have a great chin, so he's not a great example. Charles chin wasn't great either, so I can't really equate just how good of a puncher he was or not.

I really wonder how Rocky would react after getting hit by Frazier's left hook, Foreman's clubbing combo's, or Lewis' big right hand. I just don't think a 185 pound man can handle those punches better than a 205-220 lb. fighter.

I see nobody wants to touch this issue? I would have assumed that all the Marciano nuthuggers would have been jumping in singing his praise of how he could have taken a punch from a silverback gorilla withought flinching.

Moore has a 22-1 21 KO record fighting HWs over 200 pounds.

Yes, but Moorer is a great puncher.

Louis not having a great chin negates his punching power? :huh

It's only been an hour, man. It took days for me to fill a page on my UK and USA reptilian conspiracy VS Sugar Nikolay Valuev thread. And that was a lounge thread. They move fast in the lounge.

Archie Moore was one of boxings best punchers ever, he said Marciano had best chin of anyone he faced. You put Cooper and Stewert ahead of him and Walcott? :patsch
