Could a lighter man fight in a heavyweight division if he wanted to?

    The part in bold I don't understand at all, the rest makes sense. Are you saying, or rather the document you linked, that 176 to 187 is like a no mans land where a fighter could never weigh or he wouldn't be allowed to fight? That makes no sense to me at all.

    Well, basically yes!
    At cruiserweight the column for "weight difference allowed" says 12 pounds. As the upper limit is 200 pounds, that would mean you'd have to be at least 188.
    I agree it seems strange, though...
    Well and the part for not being allowed to fight between 175 and 188 would obviously only concern title matches.

    Zsolt Erdei was only about 178lbs when he fought Fragomeni for the WBC cruiserweight title last year, so that rule can't be applied universally.

    so would it make the source you posted outdated?

    too bad there are no fighters except for Jones who could prove the theory right, the question is still open for debate.

    There has not been a 200 pound champion since....at least Mike Sinks. Roy Jones picked on Ruiz with his ref, and as we know Ruiz doesn't stop anyone. Jones was one and done.

    A 180-190 pound guy could in theory compete, but he's going to need top level power, a top level, chin, and of course lots of skills to over come a severe height, weight, reach, and likely strength disadvantage.

    im aware of that im not asking if they can compete and win, im simply asking whether they'd be allowed to fight if they wanted to. All im asking about are rules and regulations and whether commision will admit the lighter fighter in the ring under those circumstances.

    So if Greb or Walker complete today, they could NOT weight in there middleweight weights if they wanted to crack some heavyweight heads like they did in the 20's and 30's?

    it's a shame roy didn't try to defend, it would have been very interesting to see if his speed could have befuddled one of the klitschkos.

    Jones was under 200 pounds when he fought Ruiz. Heavyweight is open to anyone. It has no weight limit. If the money is there to be made I think you could see a 180 pound guy in there.

    I thought the rules were that you could fight at any weight you wanted to over your fighting weight and the rules only applied to stop heavier fighters fighting at lower weights
    In other words a 168lb Roy Jones could fight a 250lb heavyweight in a heavyweight fight - but a 250lb heavyweight would not be allowed to compete at SMW

    the Jones example was covered before, at the time roy fought Ruiz the cruiserweight limit was still 190lbs, they raised it to 200lbs afterwards. It was my guess before that you had to weigh at least a pound over a cruiser limit to be qualified to compete in the heavyweight division, but quite a few people said that you can weigh whatever you want.

    but even if the fighter is allowed to fight in theory what use is it to him anyway since the commision wont be keen on sanctioning the fight. how do you convince them, or protest maybe?
