that was a skilless brawl while toney jirov was sweet science at its best

a educated pressure fighter vs a masterful counter puncher.

Why? That fight was exciting enough as it was surely?

    Oh dear.

Anyone fancy explaining to this chap that a fight from 1997 can't really be considered for the Fight Of The Decade?

Because Steward would have been going ape ****, and Jones is a stellar commentator. He couldn't make this gig because of a family function.

    Arthur vs Gomez
    Brodie vs Chi
    Dunne vs Cordoba

3 lesser known fights off the head that Id rate above Toney-Jirov

I thought that you were critical of Steward's commentating earlier on this thread?

It's definitely up there in the top 5 list. Jirov is a very good fighter, 10x better than a bum like Calzaghe who slaps while Jirov knows how to throw a real punch in bunches.
Too bad Calzaghe is such a wimp and too afraid and Warrrenized to move up to fight LHW and challenge Toney or Jirov. Too bad, but that's what BUMS do!

Depends how you look at it. I said that Steward made the Gatti/Ward fight more exciting than it was with his dramatics. If he's making the fight more exciting for the fans, that can only be a positive thing from a spectators point of view. Nothing worse than a boring and uninterested voice calling the action.

    Always thought Freitas-Barrios was a ******* myself.

So you would want Steward to make the Barrera-Morales fight seem more exciting than it was?

I tend to think him going ape **** would be warranted in a fight like Barrera/Morales I which is on a whole different planet to Gatti/Ward.

In terms of skill, yes it is.

In terms of excitement, they are of a similar standard.

    Gatti-Ward 1 is a good old-fashioned thriller, this can't really be denied?

I think Gatti/Ward consisted of 2 very good rounds and one all-time great round. Barrera/Morales I was consistently entertaining, consistently fought at a high-skill level. Two different classes of fights in my opinion, both in terms of excitement and skill. This of course can be be denied because it's subjective.

Fair enough, I just think Gatti-Ward 1 is the definition of a cracking fight. It's a far cry from Whitaker vs McGirt or Toney vs McCallum, but it's deep down n dirty war that I don't understand anyone not enjoying and rating. Different strokes.
