Where is Winky Wright? Is he retired??

One of the best fighters in the world at his peak. Sadly, the way things are going only but the hardcore fans will remember him, and even then some of us may need a reminder.

Oscar never offered Winky a deal so he didn't price himself out of a fight.

 

Winky never made himself attractive either though. After he beat SSM he had an inflated sense of self worth. He wanted to cash in his chips and pursued DLH vigourously. DLH fought PBF instead in a much bigger money spinner.
Winky was a good fighter no question. But theres a good reason why spent some time in Europe and had a fairly non-descript early career. The dude was boring to watch.

 

He made 6 million less than Tito in their fight which was right after his fights with SSM. So I don't agree that he had an inflated sense of self worth. Plus he called Oscar out after he lost to Floyd and Oscar still didn't make an offer to fight Winky, and took a fight that he thought would be easier against Manny (yes I know Manny is considered a god on this board but he was the underdog in that fight).
I do agree with you that Winky's style wasn't appealing to most fans, but I also believe that Oscar didn't want to fight him after he saw what Winky did to SSM and Trinidad.

 

I don't remember hearing him officially retire which means he'll probably be back the next time a young star needs a name to beat on, but seeing as he's had 1 fight in the last 3 years and he lost that emphatically It's clear his days on relevance are over.

No..its true...Wright turned down 6 million + share of PPV buys, it was his biggest pay day...I believe his excuse was that he had just beat Mosley and wanted the same deal Oscar offered Mosley. :yep

I looked it up and I found two articles that were both dated in 2008, both stated that Oscar never even offered Winky a contract. There was also an interview that was posted on ESB where the interviewer even said that Oscar told him there was no chance that he would fight Winky.

 

i think he has a payday or two. he should angle for a fight with pavlik. it would be big money and at least he stands a fair chance of outboxing him
