Why do people think Marciano had such a great chin?

Why all of this talk of Hurricane Jackson. He was big and durable, but not much of a puncher. Kind of like Ken Norton in that he was a tall swarmer but sturdier and a little crazy with no real skills.

-His fighting style was unmatched by anyone then or since. He possessed little punching power and was certainly no stylist. To say he was very unorthodox would be putting it mildly. What he did have was boundless energy, good speed ,unlimited stamina and a good chin.

Supposively, he was also a sparring partner of Marciano. Story goes, Jackson got hit with a body punch and puked all over the ring and was promptly fired. A few good wins and performances but the guy was a clown, more known for his weird interviews and antics than actual fighting ability. Post Marciano, Ezzard Charles battered Jackson all over the ring.

-Valdez was a big puncher but Moore bested him in what was described as a crowd pleasing brawl, busting his eye shut and staggering him throughout. For perspective: Moore, Layne, and Charles' KO victim Bob Satterifield brutalized Valdez with his right hand, causing grotesque swelling on his eye and dropped him late.

Well whats a real heavyweight contender?

If Archie Moore can beat Nino Valdez then isnt he entitled to call himself a real heavyweight contender?

Its not like he is being protected by a weight limit.

Archie Moore´s hw resume is good enough to think about a Top20 ranking ... people who don´t think he was a serious contender have no clue what they talk about.

It's obvious. He did get hit and he was never knocked out ... I'm not from the school that believes he was Chuvalo like ... he never took flush bombs from a Foreman or Frazier to earn that level of accomplishment but for a cruiser he was a monster ...

Watch the first round v.s. Walcott ... he was tagged, he went down ... Walcott could definately smack and he went balls to the wall to pounce on Rocky and take him out ... Rocky showed tremendous balls and chin by not folding against fresh Walcott and coming right back ..

There is no question he took a very good shot ...

Tommy Jackson was a very light hitter. In fact, he couldn't hurt his sister if he landed flush. He was a out of control mauler/swarmer with endless stamina, not a puncher.

Nino Valdes, Ok. Yes he could hit hard. He was big and very long. But could he hit harder than Joe Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott, and Archie Moore? I don't think so. Moore outslugged him twice, and Louis knocked out Valdes in 1 round in an exhibition.

37-0 22 year old Roland Lastarza was not quality?

Moore also outslugged Valdes 2x, whom you accuse Marciano of not fighting out of fear.

He beat Joe Louis, who was 6'2 214lb and # 2 rated in the world. No, he was not young. However, he was still very good. Even at 37, he was better than Nino Valdes(whom he knocked out) and Tommy Jackson. Rocky spotted Louis 4" in height and 31lb in weight.

Joe Louis may have been 37, but he still had a better jab than Nino Valdes, Tommy Jackson, or any other fighter in the division. He was tall, too, at 6'2. Marciano dealt with Louis jab wonderfully, and although he took some good licks, he did not let it dictate the fight.

Hurricane Jackson? Yes, without a doubt, considering Hurricane Jackson was NOT a puncher, AT ALL.

Nino Valdes? Valdes was plenty big and powerful, but I don't think their is any reason to believe he hit harder than Moore and Walcott. If you read up on the Moore-Valdes II fight, Archie slugged with him for 15 rounds, and beat him. I also think Joe Louis, with 1 punch, was still more dangerous than Valdes,

Mederos? Is that a joke? LMAO.

Then why couldn't Valdes do it to 180lb fighters like Archie Moore, Bob Satterfield, and Harold Johnson?

This was pure class from Moore - the KO - and even more class waiting patiently to assist his opponent back to his feet - in no rush to celebrate his own neat handy work

The 50's was a downtime for heavies and the competition was not very good. Marciano went ball-to-the-wall with past prime fighters like Walcott and Charles, and had a slight tough fight in the very "Old Mongoose".
Moore himself could not even gain a championship. People talk about his kayo percentage in the division, but outside of Valdez, his competition wasn't that good at heavyweight, and he always lost to the top guys there.
As tough at Marciano was, I really wonder how he would have reated to getting hit flush by a guy like Shavers, or Liston. I personally think Liston would have whooped his ass.

The only top guys to beat Moore in the heavyweights were Marciano, Patterson, and a kid named Clay.

Not to shabby if you ask me. And these 3 guys were not just "Top" guys, but all are top 20 heavyweights about.

Clarence Henry, Bob Baker, not good? These men were terrific highly rated and powerful young heavyweights.

I really would have to see how Rocky's chin would hold up against a Tyson, Foreman, Shavers, Liston, or even a Razor Ruddock to really see how his chin holds up.

A downtime!! Boxing was at a peak, it was not a downtime at all. ERnire Shavers got ass kicked by lightheavy who was 5' 9" or 5' 10" tops, and was no Marciano by any means. It was at Shavers peak. He was flored twice and ran rest of fight after round 7, plus his best shot did not hurt guy . Shavers needed a stationary target, and lost every time he fought top fighter.

I think Holy's chin is underrated and Marcianos is overrated
