A quote from Vitali Klitschko., In chess, nobody is an expert, but everybody plays. In boxing everybody is an expert, but nobody fights.
The thing about his defence is, people think it's good but it really isn't - It's a reflex based defence. Whitaker had reflexes but unlike Dirrell, he combined those with great timing and and defensive manouvres. Dirrell doesn't have those which is why he runs and when he's on the inside, clinches. That isn't good defence. Great physical ability but that's it. IRS a common flaw with fighters so gifted because they don't need to learn as much as others to win fights. They neglect learning but a vert small minority get away with it. Dirrell won't be one of those because he doesn't have the heart.
lots of things. throws fast accurate combinations to head and body keeping himself balenced at all times. counters off the back foot and ducks or dives out the way with out getting hit. switch hits better than just about anyone and has similar power with both hands. doubles and triples up with the jab. keeps a high gaurd when he's in range and getting hit. leads with the straight left or straight right depending on what stance he's using. he can do this because he's so fast. roles the shoulder like mayweather to avoid punches. i could go on!
he really isnt all that just look at his fights with curtis stevens and carl forch he's still an amatuer boxer
i wouldnt say his defence is as good as whitikers and maybe it is reflex based. but its stil very very good. just ask froch and abraham. i would say dirrell has more in his attacking arsenal than whitiker though. plus ur comment about him not learning bacause he's not dedicated. how do you know he isnmt dedicated?????? he looked pretty focused and motivated against abraham. the only truth people have said about him is his heart when he's taken to the deep end and also his power isnt that great. but remember he's only young so thing like that can improve.
Of all the boxers to rise to the top levels lately nobody has impressed me more than Andre Dirrell but ive seen glimpes of none toughness and to get through a top career at the top level you need that toughness. But ive seen a hell of alot more good points than bad. Hes a very assured boxer thats for sure.
how can u call him an amateur boxer. the guy beat arthur abraham one of the most feared and respective punchers in the game.
I think a lot of these guys see guys like Floyd & try to emulate that w/out having the knowledge & skills to pull it off. I agree Dirrell is not able to do it now. If he really works on his game, he might be able to.
love that quote. he's an intellegent guy. thats why americans dont like him. he doesnt talk trash or act like a clown. he's a thinking person with an intellegent style in the ring.
2:08 is the sign of greatness and someone without heart and an extreme amount of skills wouldn't have even attempted such a move against the consensus hardest puncher at 168. It seems things move slower visually to Dirrell then other fighters. Andre dirrell is Andre Dirrell and not sweet pea. He doesn't emulate, He does what he is able to do because he is gifted enough to do it as others would if they were gifted enough to not get hit. Pernell Whitiker is the best Defensive fighter of all time so no need to put his name in this. His heart is in question but nobody questions his poor gameplan against froch which he stuck to with discipline. If the gameplan was to engage then froch wouldn't have made it 12 rounds seeing that he couldn't hit dirrell when dirrell became aggressive with him. Add to that the fact that kessler hit froch with alot more shots and didn't wobble froch enough to straighten his leg up and make him retreat to the ropes. The heart questioning is over-rated and people will question his heart nomatter who's ass he schools. People always forgetting that he took it to froch's ass in the championship rounds. Just a poor gameplan for fighting an action champion in his hometown. Dirrell is the most talented of the SMW division.
