Johnny Tapia - Won WBO superflyweight title in '94 - Unified in '97 - Made 13 successful defences, then moved up to bantam having never lost at superfly - Also won world titles at bantamweight (WBO) and featherweight (IBF), so ended career as a 3-weight world champion - Key win: Danny Romero [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq_5ySy8dxI[/ame] Joe Calzaghe - Won WBO supermiddleweight title in '97 - Made 21 successful defences, then moved up to lightheavy having never lost at supermiddle - Also won The Ring lhw title, so ended career as a 2-weight world champion - Key win: Mikkel Kessler [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fz1qOHh0MM[/ame]
hmmm, this one is pretty close. i'm curious to see who takes this in popular opinion. i'll tell you, if i had to pick one fight to watch the rest of my life it'd be tapia vs romero rather than calzaghe vs kessler any day of the week
I don't hold Romero in that high regard. Super Flyweight typically has 1 or 2 very good fighters in the division at one time, whilst everyone else just play the role as cannon fodder. That sounds harsh, and it is, but the point remains that Romero was working his way through average opposition before fighting Tapia. He was soundly beaten in the fight, and would never recapture a World title again. Joe Calzaghe's win over Kessler is more impressive in my mind, at least the Viking Warrior bounced back from defeat and only lost to the very best whereas Romero succumbed to the likes of Willy Salazar. I don't know the circumstances of the defeat, but I do know the quality of Salazar because I have his fight with Yuh on tape. He's just barely competitive with a Light Flyweight in that one. Johnny Tapia was a better fighter in terms of punching technique and overall attributes, but I'm not sure he should be considered "greater". I'll have to give it more thought.
Tapia. I like how he fought I like his resume better and overall I think he's better. Call me crazy but that's how I feel.
i can't argue with the punching technique, but overall attributes? i don't think so.. even stevie wonder can see that.it's not even close!!
Ayala/Tapia fights also kick the crap outta anything I've seen from Calzaghe. Nothing against Calzaghe but I just find his style very unappealing.
You may be right about that. Just me loving Barrera/Tapia and the Tapia/Ayala fights make me biased lol.
I'm not gonna diss the guy and I actually like Kessler/Calzaghe but if someone made a deal to me to have Ayala/Tapia II or Kessler/Calzaghe, you know which one I'm picking.
