He didn't fight anyone as good as Hearns (as you know).

At least not in their primes.

But based on how he reacted to KDs, there is little evidence that he would ever fight off the backfoot.

yeah defiantly fans are very superficial today, they don't care at what stage of their career's that the loss happened, it just an sign that the fighters never no good in the first place :-(

against a puncher like Benn that seem the most likely outcome, nobody's saying he can't recover if he backs off, but if he trys that Mitchell or Brewer stuff with a puncher like Benn I think he gets his head knocked off.

yeah, good point. but my thought is that if calzaghe were hurt by a BIG puncher in their prime (hearns, benn) he would have to change his strategy. i mean, hopkins was never a destroyer/finisher even in his prime but if he were when he fought cal, he would have pounced and calzaghe might have backed off. if it were benn in the ring, he would have crushed calzaghe if he tried to fight his way out of it

Mitchell, while not a Benn, had decent pop.

Calzaghe was caught clean and went down

But he didn't hesitate when he got back up.

We'll never really know, will we ?:good

very true:thumbsupit's a shame cal wasn't around around 5-10 years earlier...he could have fought collins, benn, (prime) eubank and jones.

I'd pick him over all of the above.

    Except Roy.

Were not disagreeing with your points, what were saying is that, that kind approach would of been a kamikaze kind of **** to try to pull against a puncher and finisher as lethal as Benn, ending likely with Calzaghe getting sparker out.

    Very possibly.

But based on his history, I can't see Calzaghe dealing with it any other way.

The one I'd like to see most would be Calzaghe-Jones.

I think it would be one of Roy's sterner tests, but I see him taking it between 7-5 and 9-3

I'd lean towards Tommy, even at this weight.
Calzaghe is under-rated by many though.
    Interesting fight.

Well then I believe Benn would knock him out because if Calzaghe is going to trade with Benn everytime hes hurt (even once I would consider too risky), hes getting sparked out,

But if he does what he did in the Kessler fight where he came out trading with Kessler in 4th and nearly got dropped but then saw sense and went back to boxing, then he may very well win the fight against Benn.

This is in reference to any Calzaghe discussion in general.

Never at any time has Joe been my favourite fighter - far from it really. It's a stance that gives me a bit of leeway in taking a back seat and having a good laugh at all of the people who hate his guts to an almost apoplectic degree without realising the hypocrisy of it all or having the gumption to admit being clouded by bias. I can't think of another single fighter discussed on these boards whose record, personality and fighting style are all subject to such negative deconstruction.

Take Hopkins and Jones for example. Both are frequently compared with the best of the best despite sharing many similar failings with Calzaghe, ie. the average opposition, rare cases aside; odious, bullying personalities in and out of the ring; styles that weren't/aren't always a pleasure to watch for one reason or another; the selectiveness of their negotiating; Calzaghe being noticeably past his own best when facing them beyond the time of their own respective peaks.

The likes of redrooster and Pachilles get more stick on here for bias and trolling where Leonard and Duran are concerned despite being about 10 times more entertaining (and sometimes insightful) than most of the boring ****s who stand on the pulpit of 'objectivity'.

And I'll add once again - just to stave off anybody who thinks that I'm the sort of person who enjoys rummaging through his dustbins for stuff to flog on ebay - that I'm not the biggest fan of Joe.
