N, you mean the Lew Tendler fight, not the much later Lew Jenkins.. There is no available footage of the great Benny Leonard..and it is a shame...
Interesting query,Swarmer. Like the picture of Ezzard. He looks really young there. Any idea what year it was taken ?
Like Duran, Leonard had a little of everything. I think Benny can pull this off, by the narrowest of point margins. If this was a 10 fight series, it would be split 5-5, all by decision.
I think Benny Leonard was way ahead of his time, but he still boxed during the transitional era so this is really hard to analyze.
Arcel never worked the corner for Leonard when he was Champ.Leonard was a 35 year old welterweight when Arcel hooked up with him. Benny had lost his dough in the crash, and came back strictly for the cash.
I believe wins this with his advantages in power, speed and pace also his ability at cutting of the ring and great head movement on the way in will help set traps and corner Leonard and wear him down. Duran by late stoppage between Rds 9 - 11
At lightweight, Duran took a better shot, and he was much more of a natural instinctual fighter, whereas Benny was largely self made. Leonard's not playing the head games he did when Tendler stunned him, due to the language barrier, and El Cholo's killer instinct. Beyond that, you know Roberto's going to the body for the duration of the contest. He did not necessarily count on bodywork leading to a knockout. Duran was perfectly content to employ it for scoring purposes as well. Coming in fully prepared with the right plan, as he did for Montreal, he swarms his way to the decision.
Arcel is on record as saying Leonard wins & that Duran's never fought anyone who's in the same class as Leonard.
Roberto Duran can't out box Benny Leonard on the outside. Everyone knows this including Duran and Leonard. Which means Duran is going to come at Leonard. Leonard can out box Duran from the outside. Leonard picks Duran off coming in all fight. When fights mattered Leonard was on top of his game. When Leonard was on top of his game no one was going to beat him.
