Rico, you and Cobbler seem to have a total lack of understanding of how this works.

Where is this 1.25million supposed to appear from?

HBO consider if worth 2 million on the U.S market, other broadcasters/promoters will determine approximately the same. HBO don't care about GBP's contract, they are just declaring what it's worth.

Anyway..So lets say in youre scenario , you believe (incorrectly), that Khan's 1.25 is seperate to the purse. That would leave 750k purse, and that includes the cost of hosting the event....

That bid would LOSE!, because other promoters who don't have to take out 1.25million prior to determining their purse would win easily.

Now do you understand how ridiculous that would be?, HBO for a start would not allow GBP to give away the fight like that.

My opinion is that HBO will up their offer to 2.27 million before it event gets to purse bidding. That way it will all work out.

This 1.25 million agreement, has been in place a looooong time ago. The parties wouldn't have agreed this if they didn't have the money to honour it! The problem is not the 1.25 million that Khan's been promised. No. It's the excessive 1 million that Maidana is asking for, which holding up the deal. There's just not enough in the pot to keep everyone happy if he continues to stick with this. You're forgetting that GBP and HBO want to get paid themselves. Maidana's ridiculous demands are short changing them.

Who are these 'other promoters' who are going to take a flyer on sticking in a big bid for a fight where they have no promotional interest in either fighter, no tv deal and no venue? It's not impossible of course, anyone can enter a pursebid, but this fight is hardly an obvious cash cow. Who is likely to?

Why on earth would HBO care?

Exactly. It was the same thing with the Paulie fight. Half way till the fight, Paulie demanded more of the purse or he threatened to pull out. So they gave in and gave him the purse he demanded only to take money from Ortiz and Campbell's purses which led to the GBP 90 Day Ban from putting fights in NYC.

GBP just can't afford to put £1M out for Maidana. ESPN quoted themselves that Maidana is the reason it's not going forward because he wants a higher demand of the purse and it's just not feasible.

Which ever way, Khan will get that 1.25 million he's been promised. HBO increasing their offer to 2.27 million (or whatever else is done) will be the only way to please Maidana.

I'm not entirely sure what time frame you mean by "loonnnggg time". It was actually mid January. A 3 fight deal at a minimum purse gaurantee of 1.25million per fight.

Maidana isn't asking too much. He just wants his entitlement, which is 45%. HBO are giving 1.25 to khan, so quite rightly he wants 1 million. I don't see how you can argue that he doesn't deserve it. He is interim champion.

    It's GBP's problem, not Maidana's.

Also for reference, Khan has yet to recieve 1.25million. He took a cut against Mallignaggi, because then, as now, HBO didn't offer enough money.

Answering you're first question would take me about an hour to write. You seem to think that promoters are investing money in some way. This isn't grassroots, at this level it's not about chances and development. It's about which promoter can stage the event, offering the highest purse will maximising the profit for himself. This is the entire point of purse bidding championship bouts.

Promoters meet with broadcasters, find out what they are willing to offer, subtract the staging cost, determine adequate venues, gate receipt and a cut for themselves and then put in the purse bid. It's as simple as that.

So who pays for the others things then? Khan Co-Promotes the event.

The venue, the other fighters, the flights and many other things have to be covered aswell and that doesn't exactly come cheap. So who pays that off?

Not sure what you're statement about Khan co-promoting intends. Khan co-promotes, in the sense that as part of his deal with GBP he takes all UK PPV revenue directly, and deals with them under his promotional company. I assume you're refering to comments by Vali in which he indicated cleverly (without actually saying it and lying) that the cost of staging actually cost team Khan money, this isn't true. GBP handles all U.S elements

As for costs. In this instance HBO's offer of 2 million covers the entire event. Costs will be a few hundred 100k. Which further makes paying Khan 1.25million appear outrageous

So putting Khan and the other costs aside would leave only 450K for Maidana? Sounds good to me. The guy is unknown and it'll still be his highest payday to date.

By the way, Maidana was offered 350K for a Bradley fight. No wonder he turned it down.

By "looooong time", I meant way before Maidana came through the door demanding $1 million. And yes with that 45% entitlement, I can't blame him. But is he $1million material? Probably not. Is he worth double what Malignaggi was given in May? Definately not. But that's just my opinion, and it could very well be that GBP/HBO will knock him down in his asking price. If not, then HBO (like you say) may be forced to increase their offer or whatever.

But I guess what I'm saying, is that it's not Khan who is holding up this fight. He's merely sticking by what GBP (and maybe HBO along with it) have promised him. They are the ones who have valued him at XX amount. Maidana on the other hand, could make things easier for GBP and accept what he's worth, and get the wheels in motion again.

But like you say, it's not his problem. It's GBP's.

Really? Are you telling me that if you're boss agreed to give you 45% of profits. Earning an average of 100k a year, you taking 45k. Then one year he earns 375k but says "no sorry you're getting 60k, not the 168k you are due, and keeps you're share for himself, then you'd say "Hey that sounds good to me!" ??

Well we don't know he did turn it down do we, he did sack his management team saying they falsely claimed he had a back injury as they wanted more cash, but who knows, my Spanish isn't good enough to figure it out.

 Obviously not but hey, In the end, Maidana is holding up the fight and Khan is getting the blame so I'd rather put it in the way that Maidana just needs to settle with what he get's.

But Maidana has a right to do what he's doing because I'd do the same thing. I just dislike the blame people are putting on Khan for this.

Well he said he did. To be fair he's not the most reliable in pulic statements, but this was fairly unequivocal.
