It's Maidana who is the spanner in the works.

His fixed demand of $1 million (or whatever it is) is what's making things so awkward for the organizers. There simply won't be enough in the pot to please everyone if they try to honour his requests. So when Khan says "Maidana is overpricing himself", he's not lying. Noway is he worth more than what Malignaggi was in Khan's last fight.

Do you think Khan would fight Maidana for $87.000? Maidana is going to accept any bid much easier than Khan because the mandatory split is better than the Golden Boy split. So if they want to make Khan happy, they have to place a pretty high bid, which will make Maidana happy, and that's why he pushed for the purse bid, it's pretty easy to see.

Khan is guaranteed 1.2 million from his contract with GBP. GBP don't have to put in a high purse bid to keep Khan happy, they just have to top up the money he gets from the purse bid to 1.2 million.

Which would give Maidana a considerably better overall purse, that is why he's pushing for the purse bid.

No it wouldn't. Maidana gets 45% of the winning purse bid, not 45% of the revenue.

Cobbler, don't you see how this just doesn't work.

HBO's 2million is the maximum GBP have to play with.

    2 million - 1.25million for Khan = 750k

Minus costs is around 500k. So GBP puts in a purse bid of 500k????, have you ever listened to purse bidding for a championship bout, there will be tonnes more bids in excess of this sum. It simply isn't competitive. They would lose. An average bid for this will be 1 million, and they won't win.

HBO consider it worth 2 million and there are other U.S. broadcasters for promoters to go to. It could go for 1.8-2million. Way in excess of (in your scenario) 500k

I can't explain it anymore than that, this is how the business operates

You don't understand. Golden Boy can't bid a small amount and give Khan cash under the table. When a purse bid is in place, the organization takes control over the purses, so if Khan's guaranteed is 1.2 million and it goes to the purse bid, Golden Boy have to bid an amount of which Khan's 60% or so would be the $1.2M, and that would give Maidana a much better purse than the one being discussed without the purse bid.

Well lets look at a comparable.

Tim Bradley v Lamont Peterson - only two bidders, Top Rank (promoting Peterson) bid $402,300, Gary Shaw (promoting Bradley) won bidding $575,000.

Now you may think Khan and Maidana are bigger than Bradley and Peterson, but twice as much is a stretch imo, especially as there's only one promoter with an actual contractual interest in either fighter.

Not sure what you figure of 500k for 'costs' is based on. Is it based on anything or did you just make it up?

No, I said "minus costs is around 500k.", as in after costs

I work in the business side of industry, by you're comments I can only assume you're a fan, or a boxer. I'm not giving you an opinion, telling you Khan is evil and so on, I'm telling you how the system actually works.

Jesus Christ what the **** is the hold up with nearly every big fight? I mean i know what the hold ups are but enough is enough already.

    Williams-Martinez
    Bradley-Alexander
    Khan-Maidana
    Ward-Dirrell
    Cotto-Chavez

Sign some ****ing contracts!! Looks like Bradley-Alexander is the closest but i'm not celebrating until a press release.

Wait is cobbler from the uk? If so then i'm not surprise he's trying to twist everybody here to think Maidana will be the one that will turn down the fight lol. I bet Cobbler defends his hero Nazeem when Nazeem refuse to fight Mayweather.

So far the poll 32 people vote "Maidana will fight Khan" while only 5 people (i bet only from england) voted for "Maidana will give up his interim title".

Yep, it really is quite straight forward. Maidana is just trying to secure himself more money for the fight, you can't blame him for that.
