As one of the lesser known commodities in the international vanguard of promising young middleweights, Korobov has held a quiet but steady presence on the undercards of Top Rank events as he is slowly brought along. Just tonight, he got eight rounds in against Anthony Greenidge and displayed both his upside and the attributes that may be causing his handlers to hold the reins short in his progress.

He has excellent punch execution and has a good intuitive mastery of agility and ring generalship. His problems are a lack of creativity in mixing up his offense when he is stymied, and a tendency to lay off the gas pedal in these situations where he's cruising to victory, which leads to him getting hit with some stupid punches. That isn't a big deal against Anthony Greenidge, but when he steps up to the likes of Pirog, Lemiuex, Guerrero, etc. it will be.

He absolutely manhandled Danny Jacobs in the amateurs - stopping him with the same type of counter rear-hand blow as Pirog, except from an opposite stance.

Great post. Agree with everything except including Guerrero's name with Pirog and Lemieux. Guerrero should drop to 154 and certianly won't be hurting any top MW

I liked Korobov right off. I'm looking forward to seeing him step up to someone like Enrique Ornales, Bronco McKart, or some one on that level.

    SMW/LHW...

I hear ya. Me too. Hopefully he'll stay busy now that that surgery is over with. He was still throwing 4-6 punch combos regularly in rounds 5-8 so that was encouraging for his first fight back in terms of his gas tank which some had criticized.

At the rate he's going that level could still be a year away at least. If it means developing his potential and producing some great style clashes when he does step up down the line though, I won't begrudge Top Rank for it.

i agree 100%, guerro is a small MW who couldnt really do much damage to ishe smith. he could do serious damage at JMW, you think he could make the cut though??

No idea, he's only 5'9 and he's about 25/26 so he won't be getting any bigger. Would be in his best interest imo. His power and chin would probably benifit being at 154. Especially with guys like Golovkin, Lemieux, Pirog, N'jikam, Korobov at 160. I really don't see how he could stand up to Golovkin or Lemieux's power.

I'd love to see him vs Kirkland or Angulo

I wasn't overly impressed with Korobov. Seemed like he wanted to get in the rounds and not finish it early but he ended up being complacent. I used to think he would be up there with the best prospects in N'Jikam and Golovkin but I'm starting to think he will be Jacobs mark II.

I'm question his heart the most, I don't know if he is the guy who can pull through adversity. That's the difference between the pros and the amateurs.

Guerrero lacks size and strength for 160, but is like a better version of Jacobs IMO. He could outbox a lot of those guys on a good night. Of course, he could also get KTFO by any of them on a bad night. :yep

In Guerrero vs. Korobov I would consider Guerrero UD and Korobov by mid-round KO both to be even money options.

My #1 concern about Matvey is he can't seem to find a trainer. Birmingham, Adams, Garcia and now he had a new one tonight, i thought they said Mccallum, didn't know he was now a trainer, maybe i heard that wrong. But he's on his 3rd or 4th trainer in 12 pro fights. Not being able to have a Russian trainer is really hurting him, along with alot of other Eastern Europeans imo.

Ornales and McKart can both still make 160. I think they are two of the best opponents you can test a young guy against. Neither has a lot of punching power, but they're to smart and to experienced to just run right over.

I know they have a common opponent in Michael Walker (Andy Lee's next opponent). And Guerrero obliterated him through accumalation of punches whilst Jacobs never had him in any real trouble. I look forward to Guerrero's development.

160 is the most exciting division right now. It's ridiculously stacked. So much so, I thought up a 16 man knockout out tournament which would be ridiculously cool......but also ridiculously unrealistic

I think he's decent but definitely hasn't lived up to the ESB hype.

If it involves Korobov, let's hear it. Otherwise it might stray a bit too off-topic, but it sounds thread-worthy! :p

Fair enough, I couldn't be bothered making a thread about it though. I've said pretty much all I had to say!
