It looked just fine against Hagler. And even though he was past his prime, he was certainly top tier opposition. He made Duran look very ineffectual in two fights as well.

Hearns sure got to him, but who didn't he get to?

Like i said, i just never considered it outstanding against the top level before, not that it was poor or anything. But Duran, Hagler when he advanced, and as you say, Hearns, it's not like they were nullified or anything. I thought the Duran rematch was highly exaggerated, but i agree Leaonard's defense was somewhat impressive there, still though that's 23 rounds of fighting. I always considered it to be good but not tremendous is all i meant, whereas against Green, it's sublime, i was just pleasantly surprised. I've only seen the Green fight once before, and it was ages ago.

 

...And on the rare occasion Ray was tagged by some insignificant shots here, he retaliated with better ones. Green was completely outclassed.

Green is totally shot here(i liked him as a fighter, despite marginal talent circa Palomino).This was an easy money hometown kind of defence, though undeniably impressive, but it's about as significant as the effortless one-sided slaughter of Kalule vs Ho Joo.This is Leonard's "ricardo Lopez" peformance.

I favour Benitez for the controlled pure boxing side of his game and Kalule for the all-out Robinson like offence and combinations.

Hearns for ability to adapt under massive pressure, with Ranzany and Price for destructive brutality against good solid top ten contenders.

 

I was even more impressed by SRL's chilling one round execution of Andy Price, and how Price was made to look like a toppling ironing board the way he stiffened when going down. This was not just some no name...Price had beaten both claimants to the welter title in Palomino and Cuevas.

 

Probably was Ray's best performance, but the Andy Price fights, and the Bruce Finch fights weren't bad either.

 

Leonard was "green" here. Atleast according to certain people.

Yes, I think a very strong case can be made that this was his best performance, and one that should help put in perspective just what Duran achieved in Montreal. For Green, Ray said he felt like a champion and fought accordingly.

 

I much prefer the Benitez fight. I am a massive supporter of Benitez and feel he was a superb pure boxer.

Leonard really controlled the bout there well with a masterful jab and sharp combinations, getting of first against the slick Benitez and off setting what was coming back to him. Really controlled performance by a young Leonard. It is also one of my favrouite fights.

 

Was Leonard known for hitting hard? I don't beleive he was, he was known for his speed and accuracy in his shots, but a lot of the time, he was handing out punches that were not very devastating as opposed to the orginal Sugar Ray.

 

Andy Price thought he hit hard.
