I was considered ":small " for my division, but I licked the toughest and
AVOIDED fighters of my era...Never a champ, because of 2 Hall of Famers.
    Who was I ?...

A tricky one, Burt... as quite a few fighters could be said to fit this profile. This is probably not what you're looking for - but just to get things started; a shot in the dark: Dave Shade.

I realize, it's a bit of a stretch to claim that he is now forgotten - but for a man with 250 fights, and wins over a long list of champs/contenders, it's surprisingly little we hear him mentioned these days.

The 2 HOFers, who stopped him from becoming a world champ, would be Jack Britton and Mickey Walker (in his only 2 title shots)... and if the "small" hint has nothing to do with his size, it could refer to him being just a kid (19 years, 3 months), when he challenge Jack Britton for the welterweight crown.

But as said, I would be surprised, if this is the answer you're looking for! The man you have in mind, is he a more familiar name to today's fans than Shade... or is he even more obscure?

No, not Dave Shade, who never got his place in the SUN..
My man was small for his division, but beat many of his divisions murderers row...At his best he only had two superiors ....
Yes, he is more known than Dave Shade...

I don't have much time, as I am on my way out But this could be many as was stated:

    Memphis Pal Moore
    Charley White
    Leo Houck
    Young Peter Jackson
    Harlem Tommy Murphy
    Eddie Shea
    Soldier Bartfield
    Young Erne

When I get back, if it is still not answered, I will do a little more research to see what I can come up with.

No not Freddie Dawson who was a lightweight, and a hell of a fighter in the great 1940s.

Johnny Risko beat Sharkey, Baer, Berlenbach, Loughran, Walker & Godfrey

Jimmy Bivins & Young Stribling both fought the best.
