Marquis of Queensbury rule #2) "No wrestling, or hugging" :deal Why is this clearly defined rule rarely if ever enforced by boxing refs? The excessive holding/clinching that often goes on (ie Last night in Frankfurt) absolutely destroys the flow of a fight, and makes the art of inside fighting nearly impossible for the guy who is being held... (not to mention nearly impossible to watch for the guy who is trying to enjoy the fight! :tired) I know you're gonna say "it's part of the game...always has been... Ali did it etc." But if they're supposed to fighting under the Marquis of Queenbury rules, it's not part of the game... IT"S ILLEGAL! I don't make this thread to slag Wladimir Klitschko... I just think it's a damm good rule, and would make the sport of boxing alot more exciting from a fan perspective if it was actually enforced. side note: If a fighter is badly hurt and hanging on to save his ass in there I don't have a big problem with clinching to survive the round... But to use it all night long as your main form of defence on the inside? ... Hell no! :nono *Other pro sports have made changes to bring more offense and excitment to the game for the sake of commercial viability... I think it's long overdue that boxing do the same. Thoughts?
If you see this as a "hater" thread you're clearly an idiot. This is not about WK... (I'm a fan) This is about the health of the sport of boxing.
it seems to be wholly dependent on the Ref. Ive seen some refs with VERY LOW tolerance of excessive clinching and start giving out warnings early on. Some refs let fights clinch ALL NIGHT LONG lol. Gets a bit repetitive and boring to see Mayweather get away with the 1punch & clinch technique over and over. Ward gets away with alot of that too. IMO, in general it seems like more refs are becoming pro-active and assertive in the ring, in maintaining a fight flow. Im seeing them to tell the fighters to fight out of the clinch instead of bailing them out, stop the action, and reset. And im seeing them give out more excessive clinching warnings faster too. And as long as 1 fighter has an arm free and is using it somewhat effective, the refs arent stopping and splitting them out and bailing out the other fighter. Ive seen a couple fighters get torn up cuz they grabbed one arm and expected to be stopped and split, but got continuously beat up by the other one (ie Ward vs Green). I think this change up has got to do with competing w/ MMA. If you're continuously stopping the action, you slow down the fight. They're pressured to give out warnings pretty early or allow one aggressive fighter to do his thing and continue to beat up the other who's attempting to stall... action will be maintained
didnt get to watch the fight. Hopefully the trainer complained to the ref? ive seen more trainers complain to the ref about a certain tactic and they DO watch for it and respond quickly. I would think if a trainer complained to a ref about an excessive clinching technique, he would watch and act on it. From what ive seen, a good portion of the refs are pretty responsive to feedback from the trainers - nothing better than good ol' communication
Yea I agree.. It's clearly not enforced but really just frowned upon.. many fighters use this as a huge tactic in their game both pressure fighters but more often the so called "slick" fighters use this..
People don't care OP but you are right. And the holding last night far exceeds Ali's holding. At least he fought on the inside at times. Literally, Wlad was punching at times and then went to hold right when Peter was trying to throw punchers. Peter is so slow and inaccurate that Wlad was still able to control him and grab him without getting hit. The leaning on and chokeshold completely nullify the opponent. They held a bit back in the day but they usually had a hand free or broke themselves up. It didn't kill the flow of the fight with the way they do know with holding for 5-10 seconds at a time every 3-5 seconds. I think the holding far exceeded the holding from Ali-Frazier II which infuriated Frazier's camp. The problem is we're talking about the heavyweight champ of the world versus some unworthy chump of a challenger. The challenger was getting no real respect from the ref. And add this to the fact that it's in Germany. Why should Klitschko move and work if he's allowed to fight and hold and lean on his opposition? Here's food for thought. When Tyson fought Lewis in Memphis, Lewis held 3-4 times and was already warned by the ref. Not even close to the extent of what Wlad was doing. Imagine how the Ward vs Green fight would've turned out if Green just held everytime he got bullied and man-handled in the corner? It takes all the work away from the guy who's trying to fight on the inside. Holding she be used more sparingly, and when a fighter is hurt. If there's some grabbing and holding with an arm free and the opposition break themselves that's another thing. That's how they fought in the old days. Everytime there's a clinch today these guys wait for a ref to break them because they want to clinch and lean and put their opponent in a chokehold. Terrible...
I think there should be a time limit for a clinch ..Though any fighters deserves a breather every now and then they should be penalized for excessive holding ..
