LOL >.. ridiculous. The USA is 66% white (non-hispanic). The country would be THRILLED IF a high level white athlete was impressively performing. Why do you think guys like Favre and Brady are so well considered? Or, why guys like Roger Clemens and before him Nolan Ryan were so highly respected.

The strength of America is that it is not homogeneous. That 66% consists of Poles, Germans, English, Irish, Italians, French, Russians, Welsh, Scots, etc., etc., etc.

Wake up ... you couldn't be more wrong.

Because the book isn't closed on his career yet, and it's always more difficult to rate fighters until their body of work is complete.

I say based on accomplishments, skills, quality of victories/losses, and how I perceive him doing head-to-head in hypothetical historitcal match-ups, somewhere between 20-30 seems fair.

Before you're quick to criticize me, I did mention yesterday:

If that is not high praise, I don't know what to tell you.

Somewhere between 20-30 seems about right to me.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine.

I will reserve final judgment when the smoke settled. Wlad still has a lot of time to improve his legacy, but on the flip-side, he still has time to do some damage to it as well.

Let's see how long his reign lasts, how many more title defenses he gets in, and gaugae his level of opposition going forward.

Is that why you think Ali's era was rated so high because he didn't "dominate" every single fight he was in?

I think Ali's era is viewed so favorably for a variety of reasons.

I think Ali's charismatic and controversial nature played a big role in defining that period, and when you consider the political landscape of the times, I think that amplifies his impact.

I also think there were a lot of great fighters in the 60s and 70s and that helped make for some very competitive matches and some intriguing clashes of styles.

But yes, I do think the competitive environment from the heavyweight landscape of that era also adds something to the way that era is perceived, most certainly.

I could go on, but I need to get a bite to eat and roll a joint before the True Blood finale.

White Americans have a tremendous amount of self-guilt due to the ravages of slavery and the evil Jim Crow era that ensued. It is a mark of their evolution as a people and should be viewed as a positive. The HEAVYWEIGHT champ is the dominant, alpha male in the world and U.S. white folk of the modern era understandably shy away from getting behind such a powerful warrior image. They prefer men like Phil Donahue; passive, intellectual, verbose and most importantly unthreatening.

    LOL .. that's absurd.

The reality is that athletes over here are simply not as bigoted and outwardly racist as dumb asses on ESB. Anyone who has actually participated in college/university sports has seen first hand that a mere 13% of our population is highly represented beyond their proportion within the population and includes a large number of very high quality athletic talent. Often the best combination of speed with power comes from this segment of our population.

I think you have the issues - in your imagination.

If Wlad or Vit were 5'10" and weighed 225 and were blowing away larger opposition (even in a gradually declining sport) they would be respected and watched. When you are larger than your opposition (and your opponents are simply terrible) and you have to clinch or fight timidly in boring affairs you don't get praised and you don't attract fans - it has nothing to do with skin color. White athletes aren't going to be impressed by these kinds of performances merely because another white guy is doing it.

Not really. You seem to be the one who is constantly pointing to black athletic superiority. Seems a bit rascist to me. In any event young white folk elected a black man to the highest office in the land, in no small part, due to white guilt The man had no real qualifications and now black unemployment and unemployment in general is through the roof. I will end this discussion now as I don't argue with politically correct dunderheads who see everything through the prism of race. If you think Wlad sucks as a fighter and isn't a top heavyweight that is fine, but I do and I assure you it has nothing to do with his skin pigmentation.

That's the point. The haters can't admit that Wladimir is a top 15 ATG Heavyweight but they'd have a hard time naming & justifying 15 better Heavyweights, let alone the fools that are claiming he's just top 30 or 50.

    This post is ridiculous. Congratulations.

Brett Farve holds many NFL records & Nolan Ryan holds MLB records and both he & Clemens are ATG pitchers regardless of them being white or not. Doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

i THINK we agree. that's what i'm saying: holmes doesn't have one great signature win. sadly, it may be cooney

louis has a number of wins over guys like walcott, schmeling and baer. all very high ranking heavyweights. but baer and schmeling were well past best and walcott likely from reports deserved that win. it's louis' longevity rather than signature wins that impresses
