Problem is ability can be subjective and not always consistent with achievment, for example we all know Joe Calzaghe had bags of ability, but Ricky Hatton with not near the same natural talent achieved more relative to his talent level IMO. I would agree and say opposition/other greats faced/beat and longevity (something that counts against Mike Tyon for example) this can be impacted though by the "politrixs" in the sport, it's something Mike McCallum suffered from so that has to be taken into account. I'm also a big advocate of title defences and cleaning out your division.
My criteria is resume, quality of opposition, longevity, getting through adversity and ablility. I know i do place more on abilty than most though.
GTFOH Calzaghe isnt even close to Lopez:nono Mayweather - hard to rank lets see how he does against Pac probably top 25-30 right now. Lopez top 35 Marciano top 40 Calzaghe top 100 Chavez Jr top 10 at current Jm or Mw.
I realise that, but this was a question of the criteria and yours was purely ability. My point is ability can't be used as the lone criterion because it's not always black and white, external factors influence percieved ability. Judging ability to some is inextricably bound with acievement...so how much more ability would people attribute to Ezzard Charles had he not got screwed for large part of his career? You see i know deep down Calzaghe had insane, special type of ability. But its not rubber stamped and there's room for argument because it contradicts his resume. If that makes sense. Have you ever heard of Georgie Benton? Well Benton was one of the most skilled guys, the original shoulder roller no less. But his career was effectively sabotaged by the boxing establishment. Would he be more highly thought of had he had the right connections? of course!
the percieved quality of a given accomplishment can also be influenced by external factors. Accomplishment is not as black and white as you make it seem. I believe accomplishments are generally a reflexion of a fighter's ability, but not the sole reflexion.
Thats very generalistic. I can only think you could measure ability by comparing the fighter to those he has fought. = resume.
True i mean if your going to go by his criteria than Vinnie Pazienz is an atg.....................NOT:nono
