The title of the thread is self-explanatory, who is the worst fighter to ever breach the top 10 in the sport?

I don't have a record of all of the top 10s which have ever been, so it's very likely that there are some real howlers I can't even think of now, but as far as I can gather, I'd probably go with Juan Diaz.

Buster Douglas is obviously a strong contender, but at least he did produce one sensationally brilliant performance in his career. Diaz never did as I see it. His credentials were good enough to see him in there, he did unify lightweight titles by beating Acelino Freitas and was undefeated at the time, but I never really bought him being a real top fighter, I never saw anything in his skillset to suggest this. And I suppose this was proven when he lost to Robbie Peden's ****toy, Nate Campbell.

I don't really have a strong conviction on this though, Diaz is just the guy I can think of right now that I rate least of the p4p ranked fighters I can think of. I suppose there is a case to be made for Jermain Taylor or Kelly Pavlik, or any one of the recent graduates such as Celestino Caballero.

Junior Jones would fall into the same category as Buster Douglas for me; far from being a p4p calibre fighter, but did produce a bona fide world-class performance vs a proven HOF fighter in Barrera.

1994 was a pretty feeble year as I remember, I'm sure Frankie Randall, Miguel Angel Gonzalez and even Kevin ****ing Kelley reached the dizzy heights then, and Kennedy McKinney made it in around that time as well.

I think I'll stick with either Juan Diaz or Kevin Kelley as my pick for the worst ever.

    All suggestions/abuse welcome :good

I agree with Buster Douglas, but I do with Junior Jones. I think Jones was a guy who had great potential but was not consistent. Somewhat like Tim Witherspoon. But he gave hell to most top guys he fought.

Look at the current, there are a few candidates: Nonito Donaire, Fernando Montiel, Paul Williams, ...

Donaire is a bit of an unproven mystery just now. Could be great or could be an overhyped nothing.

I like and rate Montiel, but I hear what you're saying.

I didn't expect Williams's name to pop up so often this early on this thread...

    lol

im of the opinion that although he is talented... he uses the excuse that he is avoided to duck opponents

also i think his resume is distinctly average

if he beats martinez in their upcoming fight then yeh ill consider him p4p, but until then i just consider him a hype job

He reminds me of hearns abit ,size and ring activity, so its probably abit unfair to say hes the worst ever fighter in a p4p list but he was the first to come to mind

    Wlad Klitschko. ;)

But seriously...I'd probably agree with Diaz, at no point was he a P4P boxer. I can't think of anyone else at this point.

Kevin Kelley was a good fighter. He was 50-1 at the time he fought Hamed in one of the most exciting fights iv seen.

Maybe not P4P level but he was extremly decent.

    Worst P4P ranked....Kelly Pavlik...Juan Diaz....Ricky hatton was also NEVER a P4P fighter

Resume wise I'll agree that Donaire debatably shouldn't or should be in the p4p list, but skill wise he should be there. It's not his fault no one would fight him.

Im pretty sure Mayorga made it on there after beating Forrest , Forrest having arrived after beating Mosley. truth be told outside of one opponent neither Mayorga or Forrest really belonged. Not that both werent great fighters in their own different ways.

In 2004, Glen Johnson was a much better fighter than guys like Juan Diaz and Kevin Kelley ever were.

I actually think Johnson should be nowhere near this debate. JMO.
