Tarver in no way shape or form won this fight.

The last sentence of your post shows that maybe you were happy to see Jones finally lose in their rematch, but in the first bout; Tarver blew it. Jones won that fight clearly.

Out of curiousity, since the fight is clearly posted do you mind sharing your scorecard?

Tarver had his chance here but blew it by spending too much time standing in the middle of the ring doing **** all. Although some credit should be given to Jones for his bodywork, it wasn't merely Tarver pissing it away, it was Jones doing some good stuff and also Tarver choking.

Tarver certainly take care of business the next time around but Roy won this one fair and square.

One of the most uncontroversial "controversial" decisions I've seen.

    Pay no mind to Klompton.

He probably reckons Park Si-Hun edged Roy in the Olympics as well.

Jones won a close but clear 7-5 in the opinions of most unbiased observers which most definately doesn't apply to Klompton,a keen Jones hater.

I thought it was fantastically stupid of Roy to move all the way back down to 175 after Ruiz, as he had to shed muscle and not fat to get there. I was convinced there was no way he would not severely weaken himself. When he pulled off the win, I felt he'd dodged a bullet, and either should retire undefeated, or head for the cruiserweights. The way he subsequently nosedived did shock me though, and will have a lethal impact on his historical standing.

    I had it 116-112 Jones.

Rounds 3-6 Tarver did near absolutely nothing. I think in rounds 4-6 he threw a total of 4 power punches.

I have often pondered that history might look kindly upon Tarver.

As I said, I think prime Jones beats him, but Tarver always had a personal thing with Jones mentally, and also his height and style were just a bad style matchup for Jones. Tarver really had the right style to beat Jones, he just didnt have the greatest skills. He had good ones, but not great ones, thats why he was the most competitive with him.

The OLDER:eek:ldHopkins and Toney (even amongst heavyweights like Peter 2X, Ruiz, Rahman 2X and Holyfield), have never been stopped, and they've now gone well past the age where it would matter if they were. For Roy just to get flattened that first time by Tarver can be dismissed as an anomaly, like Hurricane Carter's ambushing of Griffith. But to play the stoppages at the hands of Tarver, Johnson and Green back to back to back...well we never saw that happen to Griffith, Monzon, SRR, Hagler, or countless other greats. Those three knockouts are particularly egregious in light of the fact that he had Shilstone's conditioning regimen down pat.

Lennox gets blasted for having it happen to him twice, despite avenging both outcomes.

Monzon/Hagler/Griffith all retired a younger age than Jones, Hagler/Monzon weren't even far from their prime when they retired. Other greats have similarly late career stoppage losses - see Ezzard Charles, Tyson, Lloyd Marshall. All of Roy Jones real losses came from the age of 35 onwards, when most fighters have hung them up

But his losses are happening in an era when top fighters are competing successfully at advanced ages, and his defeats, especially the stoppages, contrast horribly when compared to how former conquests and elders Toney and Hopkins have done. (Now that Roy has lost to Bernard, do you suppose he'll give Lights Out a shot at revenge? And if he does, would you expect him to win again?)

Thanks in large part, I suspect, to PEDs, 40 seems to be the new 30, except in cases like Bowe (whose early demise into punchiness while still in his 20s makes him stick out like a Christmas ornament).

I believe Monzon was 35 though when he fought Valdes, and he had his chin tested in both fights. Jones was the same age when he had his chin checked by Tarver and Johnson.

Tyson chin looked solid against Lewis though, despite being KO'd. Marshall did have a somewhat vulnerable chin and he was a fighter who put himself out there, kill or be killed. Allegedly took some dives also. Charles just looks like a physical wreck from the Marciano fights onwards, the same which I can't quite say for Jones who retained much of his handspeed if not his legs nor the reflexes, although perhaps his handspeed flattered him in the late stage of his career, proving once and for all that handspeed alone is not the most important of things. It's Jones's overall speed that got him by.

People make much of the fact that Miske was terminally ill, but in the case of Charles, it may simply be that he was not diagnosed until 1966. He said after discovering this that he sensed his affliction during his peak! If true, what might he have achieved if in perfect health, as well as fitness? In light of his fatal ailment, his latter career defeats don't mean that much to me.

It was especially against an opponent in a division they belonged in.
