Mayweather, Corrales camps trade words

Fight averted in valet area at MGM Grand

Kery Davis, senior vice president of HBO sports, joked at a news conference Thursday to promote Saturday's fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Diego Corrales that he is glad HBO is getting a chance to televise the fight before it occurred in a bar.
Instead, though, it nearly occurred in valet parking. Mayweather and his entourage encountered Corrales and two bodyguards at valet parking Thursday, only minutes after a news conference to promote their battle at the MGM Grand for Mayweather's World Boxing Council super featherweight championship had ended.
The bodyguards on both sides were trash talking, though Mayweather also hurled several epithets at Corrales, who remained silent. The fighters, who nearly got into fights at Mandalay Bay on Nov. 11 after the Lennox Lewis-David Tua bout, and on Tuesday at a news conference in Los Angeles, did not advance toward each other on Thursday.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum intervened and kept the sides apart.
"It was mostly entourage vs. entourage, but Floyd was out there yapping quite a bit, too," said radio broadcaster Dave Cokin, who witnessed the incident. "I didn't see Chico say a thing. He kind of looked and watched in amazement. I don't think he was happy, but he didn't say a word."
At least five MGM Grand security officers came upon the scene, but nothing came of it.

. He said he only began talking about Corrales' woes after he said Corrales spoke publicly about his own problems with his father, Floyd Sr.
"He opened his big mouth and spoke about me and my father," Mayweather said. "When you punch, I punch back."
• SHE'S NOT COMING -- Mayweather's manager, James Prince, said he was planning to fly in Corrales' estranged wife, Maria, who is pregnant with the couple's first daughter. Prince said he had a front-row ticket for Maria Corrales.
Corrales, though, said Prince was posturing because Maria Corrales is expected to have the baby early and expects the child to be born any day now.JEFF'S CONTENT -- One of Mayweather's uncles and former cornermen is Jeff Mayweather, who has been critical of his nephew's behavior. Jeff Mayweather is particularly upset that his nephew doesn't speak to Beatrice Mayweather, Floyd's grandmother and Jeff's mother. She raised Floyd Jr.
But Jeff Mayweather, who was fired as one of his nephew's trainers, said he is content with his life.
"I'm not bitter and I'm not looking to get back with him," Jeff Mayweather said. "I've moved on in my life."
