Thank you! A voice of reason and common sense. You will see MORE ORTHODOX styles in the AM ranks than you will UNorthodox styles. Manny didn't have the AM background or the rescourses in the Philipines that would see him with a classic boxing style. PAC had a very short AM career in a country that never had a strong AM boxing presence like the US or UK.

    Serious?

I didnt follow his amateur career because he barely had one.

I remember a story where he didnt even make the cut for his "city" team, to represent in the national amateur championships, when he was a youngster.

    He fought too wild.

Yup, I used to think didn't even have an amateur career, but it turns out that he actually did.

    "Amateur" must be very loose.

In the Philippines, 2 kids with gloves on, and fighting for lunch money in the town plaza, with adults and half the town enjoying the bout can be considered as an "amateur" fight.

Or just really raw, 8 year olds, learning how to box in a real 4 cornered ring, with real gloves.

I don't think he had a significant number of AIBA sanctioned, official amateur bouts.

My gosh...at least you're trying. Look, Floyd ain't the regular "JOE" who entered a boxing gym and found his calling. Neither is PAC.

They operate with abnormal levels of talent and athletic ability that enhances their styles. What they were born with didn't create their style...their training and their early introduction to the sport manifested the foundation of the style they both have today.

In the AM's the common Style is boxer/puncher with a strong emphisis on counter punching. It's a points system where that particular style does better in the AM's.

Even in the pros that is the more common style but in the pros there are other elements that allow OTHER STYLES that are NOT common to be successful!

Having the kinds of ability and talent PAC and Floyd have take them to anther level but it doesn't mean NO ONE else has their style...ESPECAILLY FLOYD.

We see 12 differnt version of Floyd right now...they just lack the god given gifts Floyd was blessed with. You don't see ANYONE with PAC's style SPUD.

Having 300 fights against 30 fights does not mean you will be more schooled, naseem hamed, carl froch even joe calzaghe all had upwards of 60 amatuer fights. none of these have great funbdamentals.

Ali had 100 plus amatuer fights, and i could go on and on.

It depends on your trainer how good your schooled. as a big percentage will be learned from him and also your physique.

    Go back to school johny

With pacs style he is on his toes like alot of amatuers.

jumps in and out after throwing shots like amauters

only difference is he has perfected it in a way by usin angles speed power and using shorter punches when he closes range that is the difference.

Which means he has more of an amateur style than Mayweather?

Correct me if I'm wrong...is amateur based around point scoring and counter-punching?

You should be good if you throw a lot of punches in the amateur games.

Its based on point scoring, obviously there is not a written rule saying you have to counterpunch, it is upto the indiviual and the corner to which style they adopt.

    I know, I boxed for 14 years...I was generalizing.

So what your saying is, Pacquiao's footwork is similar to the majority of amateur boxers because he jumps in and out (which Mayweather also does)...what else?

Maybe in the older style of scoring rounds in the olympics.

The "electronic" push button scoring used now (at least 3 out of 5 judges clicking the button for simultaneous score will count as 1 point, IIRC) is most advantageous to long limbed, stiff punching, head hunting boxers.

Clear 1 or 2 punches that make your opponent's head pop back, not blinding flurries.

Because of this, I think the Cuban national team even has tweaked their boxing strategies and even in their "blocking" or positioning on top of the ring to make their punches be seen better by the judges.
