What gym did you see it at, S? I never saw it at 5th St., the only gym Clay trained at when he turned pro.
Since you mention Duran, A, thought you'd get a kick outta this training incident I posted before: When Roberto Duran was training to fight Carlos Palomino at Madison Square Garden, he worked out at Howard Albert's gym, an old factory loft in the Garment Center. It was summertime, and sweltering. Every Latino worker in the area -- and their families -- watched their hero train at lunchtime. The gym was a steam room -- jammed cheek-to-jowl with the adoring. They pressed so close Duran barely had room for floor exercises. When he was done, he jumped in the ring to shadow box. Spanning what looked like a crowded subway car, you could see chests swell faces beaming with pride. Plump mothers holding babies in their arms stood at the ring apron, while their little ones looked up saucer-eyed at this God. In the midst of this outpouring of love, somebody in the back -- unbelievably! -- kept shouting at Duran in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! Duran paid him no mind and continued to shadow box. But the heckler was relentless: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! Finally, Duran fixed him with a glare, stretched as far over the ropes as he could -- just above the glowing faces of mothers and tykes -- and yanked down his trunks, grabbed his nuts and roared in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS CAN SUCK MY ****!
Eddie Futch trained alotta lotta fighters in his day. Said the very best was................................Michael Spinks! Whatever i told him to do he'd do. Whatever i told him not to do he wouldn't do.
Davey Pearl told me what a hard trainer Sonny Liston was. He mentioned that Sonny's low weights (for his size) throughout his career were due to the fact that Sonny sweated like no man Pearl ever knew before or since. The guy would be running and within a few minutes was drenched in sweat.
Disagree. For a huge chunk of his career Frazier came off the boil in terms of his commitement to training. Agree. My choice for #1, if I had to give one. Disagree. It's true that Jones was trained - to the point of abuse - by his father when he was a kid, but he became more relaxed, although he was still commited, once he parted from his father. Disagree. Ali himself talks of how he limited his training as he got older. No wise head to oversea his conditioning, ran less and less as he got on. "I can't train my hardest for every guy I fight." A hard trainer, but others trained harder IMO. Serious in sparring though (still not serious enough to tag Harry Greb :yep). Glen Johnson (hasn't left the gym in about 20 years). Bernard Hopkins (ditto). Nigel Benn Jim Jeffries Rocky Marciano These would be the five I would pick.
Trained like an animal when he loved the game, but Foreman describes him basically not training at all post-Ali.
John, Do you have any stories of watching Marciano train that showed his legendary dedication/work ethic? How powerful was Marciano when he hit the heavy bag compared to some latter champions?
Marvin Hagler trained like a beast. His training sessions looked like Clubber Langs in Rocky III lol!
