    In chronological order:
The 1919 Dempsey of Toldeo. Just a monstrous fighting machine.
The Louis of Max Baer and Godoy II
    1966-1967 Ali
    Frazier, circa 1969-1971
Holmes of Shavers I and 1982 (Cooney and Cobb)

Marciano's the hardest to leave out of my top five, but the FOTC is a better win than Rocky ever had the opportunity to produce.

As something of an eclectic choice, I sometimes go with Corbett as the best pre Dempsey heavyweight. He was past prime when he handed Jeffries a boxing lesson for 22 rounds, very possibly was robbed of a knockout win over Fitz when already dissipating from drink (and Fitz wanted nothing more to do with Corbett after that), and reports are that it was Peter Jackson, and not he, who collapsed following their 61 round marathon. He also found that Sullivan was a sucker for his feints, and this is a weakness John L. would have always had.

If all fights were to a finish, then Jeffries would easily be my top choice. Like Foreman, he was a freak of nature. An incredible athlete.

Tunney was still improving when he retired. Head to head, a real headache for a peak Louis and Marciano. I believe the Dempsey of Toldeo would have stopped him, but hold myself short of suggesting that Jack ever could have won a decision over Gene.

Post championship distance era fighters I can't fairly rate. I did see Holyfield beat Qawi over 15 rounds, and maybe that's why I rate him over all other post Holmes heavyweights.

For me, there's a top three of Dempsey, Ali and Holmes. Louis and Frazier then make that a top five.
