Why do boxing fans hate on a boxer with a weak chin?

Yeah, and without it you are not typically gonna go far in boxing, unless you have some other attribute, like crazy reflexes or outstanding defense that make up for it.

And pointing out that a fighter has poor punch resistance - a glass jaw - is not "hating." It is being factual.

 

I think also that "weak chin" is a term very overused in boxing. Getting hit with 8 oz. gloves flush has the same effect on most professional fighters if he doesnt deflect the impact of the punch if hit in a certain place. The difference is the fighters lack of defecne and overall skill. Sometimes you just get caught the wrong way, but certain fighters have styles that make them more vulnerable to taking the full impact of a punch .Usually weak chin really mean poor defence or a lapse of defence. Not seeing the punch, hands low, squared off, chin exposed, or just not getting out of the way.

lmao... You're probably the only internet badass in this thread that FAILED to make a point. Take me for example - since I answered the question. I've been caught with numerous punches I did not see coming over the years in streetfights as well as in organized sparring and have never been seriously hurt or knocked down, and I'm repulsed by hype jobs with poor punch resistance. You FAIL, son.

 

I think it's just a convenient criticism for people to use who already hate a fighter and want to justify it in a performance relevant manner.

 

The chin is not the reason that the fighter is hated on, its the fighter......

.....for example, Tommy Hearns did'nt have the best of chins, but most boxing fans loved him.

Floyd Mayweather has'nt shown signs to have a weak chin, yet people hate him because he's just an *******.

The reason it gets targeted with real malice is because boxing is a warrior sport and unfortunate genetics completely undermine the mold fans built the prototypical fighter into.

 

Because many younger boxing fans live vicariously through their favorite fighters, and they would hate to be identified with one that typified anything less than the most hearty of participants. This displaced fear of their own inadequacy also makes for the perfect slant against a hated rival.

 

I agree with the OP. I mean, you either have a good chin or you don't. And at the top level, there's really not much you can do to improve it, it is what it is so why hate on it? That's like hating on a fighter for having short arms or something.

I can understand people picking against a fighter with a glass jaw, it's a very important factor. but to actually hate or not respect a fighter just because he has a glass jaw? I don't get it. Heck, I'd probably respect a fighter who does a lot of good things inside the ring despite having a weak chin.
